Gun Buyback Bill Passed, Then Recalled (VA)
http://www.wset.com/news/stories/0209/597991.html

A bill to require localities to sell the guns they collect in buyback programs to licensed dealers passed the General Assembly, then was called back and weakened.

The Senate passed Del. Mark Cole's bill 21-18 on Tuesday without debate. An hour later, Sen. Kenneth Stolle asked that the vote be reconsidered so he could amend the bill to allow the guns be disposed of "in any other appropriate manner."

After the bill was changed, senators put off voting on it until later in the week.

Cole's bill would have required all weapons, except machine guns or sawed-off shotguns, to be offered for sale to licensed gun dealers.

Opponents said the bill defies the point of the buyback program, which is to get guns off the street by giving gun owners something to turn over their unwanted weapons.

1. Opponents said the bill defies the point of the buyback program..."
"which is to get guns off the street by giving gun owners something to turn over their unwanted weapons."

The opponets of the bill just seem like gun-grabbers to me. If the guns are sold by the state to a FFL dealer, then 3 things happen:
1) The state makes money. (good)
2) The FFL dealer can make money in resale. (good)
3) Guns that were "not in the system" of FFL paperwork (on the street an unaccounted for) are now now back in the bound books of FFL dealers and require NCIS checks to be released back into the system. The firearms, once released back onto the market, can be traced to buyers.

Stimulate the economy, support the 2A, and get more guns back "on the books".
NOW THIS IS (was) A COMMONSENSE GUN LAW.

2. It just depends on your objective.
They are trying to reduce the number of firearms in private ownership, so logically it would fly in their face to just take the very guns that were bought from private citizens and re-sell them back to private citizens.

Gotta love those true colors.
