County shows 300 percent surge in conceal and carry gun permits (OK)

Applications for conceal and carry gun permits have risen more than 300 percent since Jan. 1 in Garfield County, Sheriff Bill Winchester said.

He said applications for permits started to increase as soon as President Barack Obama became popular, even before he was elected president. Statistics from the sheriff’s office showed 25 applications in November, doubling to 50 in December and between 60 and 70 in both January and February. In response to the increase, Winchester has increased the number of full mornings his office devotes to the application process to three a week. Fingerprinting appointments are backed up through April and about 150 people are still waiting.

“People may be afraid he will make them register (guns),” Winchester said, “or tax them and tax the ammunition where no one can afford it.”

Ammunition sales also have risen dramatically, according to local retailers. One local retailer, who asked not to be identified, said his store is out of pistol ammunition and .22-caliber long-rifle ammunition.

“When we get it in and someone sees it, we sell out in an hour,” he said.

1. So, let's see here...people worried about their guns being

taken away...so they apply for a concealed carry permit. Odd, that. Doesn't that mean that the fact that they own at least one firearm is now officially recorded?

4. "Bans" don't exactly mean "taking away". It is always hopeful that any ban

will grandfather those objects already in circulation.

Of course there IS the fear it could be worse then that, (depending on the specific bill if passed) but ya pay your money ya take your chances.

At least with such massive increases in purchasing, the govt may just get the message not to be so fucking stupid as to pass such bans - of either type.

That's the fear. If I were afraid that the government might come to get my firearms (which I'm not), I certainly wouldn't make it a matter of record that I owned some. Silliness.

If there were to be a confiscation of arms, the first place the authorities would look would be the CCW lists. Next, they'd look for any other paperwork that showed a firearms purchase. After that, they'd get a court order and get the NRA, GOA, and other organization's membership lists. Of course, they've probably already bought their mailing lists, anyhow.

My point is that telling a government you fear that you own firearms doesn't track with being afraid they will confiscate them.

There are many contradictions out there with this issue.

2. That's nothing

AKM Rifles and magazines have doubled and in some cases TRIPLED in price since the election. Magazines for AR15 rifles are out of stock every where, and some popular ones like the magpul Pmag have doubled in price. .223 remington, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, .308, 9mm, .45ACP, are all next too impossible to find and are experiencing price increases.

AR-15 rifles are selling for $500 more than they used to within hours a shop getting them. Hand guns are selling like crazy, especially glocks and 1911 type pistols. The OEM 33 round glock magazines are near impossible to find and when you do have often jumped $20-30 in price.

I dare say obama/congress would have to be mildly retarded to implement any kind of ban or restriction what so ever. I think just by taking office they're stimulating the economy more than the stimulus bill :P

According to Mr. Holder he wants to start re-implementation of the expired AWB because of the problems they are having South of the border with all the automatic weapons being smuggled to drug cartels there from US gun shops and gun shows. I've never managed to find those full auto cash and carry gun shops I guess I have to keep looking or learn the secret handshake.

The President if going to have a hard time getting much of his agenda passed with a GOP House and maybe Senate in 2010. Ask Bill Clinton how easy it was to work with Newt after the 1994 ban was voted in and if it had any impact on the 2000 election by losing Arkansas and Tennessee.

7. Most of the ones...

I encounter aren't exactly the gun running types. They're mostly just happy to be able to find work. There are a few rotten ones swimming around with the good ones but you'll have that any time poor people immigrate.

I don't blame them a bit for wanting a better way of life. It's a pity they'll never have it in their home country, where most of them would prefer to stay.
