President Obama echoes Holder |
|
This evening, when asked at the televised press conference about security risks to the US concerning the Mexican drug cartels, he emphasized the manpower and technology that is/will be applied to the situation.
In closing, he referenced the "problem of guns flowing from the US to Mexico".

3. Stop drug guns? Stop selling guns to the Mexican government |
|
The solution to stop most of the drug guns in Mexico is simple. Obama needs to stop selling US guns to the Mexican military and police. When the cartel needs a gun. They don't go to San Diego, Phoenix, or El Paso. They go to the police station and buy them.

4. Where does the propaganda that Obama wants to take your guns come from??? |
|
I dunno. I mean it is almost inexplicable.
Please Mr. President, don't throw it all away for this. Crap. I was hoping SKS / AK prices would drop a bit. ARs are totally out of my range now and I wants me a carbine.

Maybe it is just a hint, from his voting record. Maybe it is just a hint from Bindens voting record. Maybe it is just a hint from Biden's response to an AR-15 owner during the election. Maybe it is guilt by association. Maybe because Clinton helped author the 1994 AWB.

8. Transcript of the q&a just so we are all on the same page... |
|
Stole this from Jefferson_Dem's thread in GDP.....
------------------- QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President. Today, your administration presented a plan to help curb the violence in Mexico and also to control any or prevent any spillover of the violence into the United States.
Do you consider the situation now a national security threat? And do you believe that it could require sending national troops to the border? Governor Perry of Texas -- Texas has said that you still need more troops and more agents. How do you respond to that?
OBAMA: Well, first of all, let’s focus on what we did today. It’s very significant.
We are sending millions of dollars in additional equipment to provide more effective surveillance. We are providing hundreds of additional personnel that can help control the border, deal with customs issues.
We are coordinating very effectively with the Mexican government and President Calderon, who has taken on an extraordinarily difficult task of dealing with these drug cartels that have gotten completely out of hand.
And so the steps that we’ve taken are designed to make sure that the border communities in the United States are protected and you’re not seeing a spillover of violence and that we are helping the Mexican government deal with a very challenging situation.
Now, we are going to continue to monitor the situation. And if the steps that we’ve taken do not get the job done, then we will do more. One last point that I want to make about this. As I said, President Calderon has been very courageous in taking on these drug cartels. We’ve got to also take some steps, even as he is doing more to deal with the drug cartels, sending drugs into the United States, we need to do more to make sure that illegal guns and cash aren’t flowing back to these cartels.
That’s part of what’s financing their operations. That’s part of what’s arming them. That’s what makes them so dangerous. And this is something that we take very seriously and we’re going to continue to work on diligently in the months to come.

10. How many weeks are we into his presidency? First Holder, now him. |
|
He is going to stay the course. And the course is on his agenda on his website. I get the feeling that he is going after the guns if he thinks that there is any chance at all he can get away with it.He might even risk a reelection over it. Holders comment caused a shit storm. So now he is going to find another way to justify attacking guns. I'll bet he figured this was a perfect time after the California police officers shooting.

11. I think they're going to be surprised at the results when they put those X-ray machines in place |
|
My prediction:
It will turn out that the number of firearms travelling illegally across the border from north to south is very small. Dozens, not thousands.
I'm glad they're going to try. Information is good.

12. Far fewer than they are trying to make people think |

Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 09:26 AM by DonP
But all they need to do is find one or two and it will be spread across every paper in the country that "See here's the proof that the gangs are buying guns in the US." They have already convinced the great unwashed masses that there is really no big difference between a full auto and semi auto (spoken like a person that has never been shot at by either)!
Hell, Paul Helmke and Tom Diaz will probably try and cross the border to Nuevo Laredo with a couple of AK's and a Browning 12 Ga. Pump down their pants legs if they thought it would help their struggling publicity efforts.
When all is said and done we'll be told by some of our "friends" right here on DU that the AWB is not "taking our guns away" just like BO promised it's just, "common sense controlling certain extremely dangerous weapons for the good of international relations".
I'm very wary of the trip Hillary is making next week to meet with Calderon and "show our support" for his efforts to control the gangs. I'm thinking that she could come back and use the trip as an excuse to start things rolling.

You really have to look out for those dastardly rapid-fire, multi-barrel street sweepers! </sarcasm>
Everything becomes a "weapons cache" to these people. I once saw a local tv station trot out a bolt action .22 rifle and a modest collection of AIRSOFT guns and use the term "weapons cache."
I didn't know whether to laugh or get angry...

16. Black market in Mexico |

It is common knowledge that the goverment recycles captured weapons by supplying them back into the police force.
It is also common knowledge that low paid police and soldiers sell their weapons all the time.
