GUNS IN THE NEWS--November 7, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. (On Mondays, stories that were originally posted to the 'Net over the weekend - Friday night through Sunday - are considered current. This allows for the fact than many people are off-line over the weekend, allowing the Monday thread to be a weekend summary.)
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials, as long as they're current. Please do not post links from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
4 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

1. 4 Found Shot to Death in Motorcycle Shop (SC)
"CHESNEE, S.C. - A customer visiting a motorcycle shop Thursday afternoon found four people shot to death, including the store's owner, authorities said.
Two bodies were in the front doorway at Superbike Motorsports, and the other two were found inside, Sheriff Bill Coffey said. The victims — three men and a woman — were shot multiple times.
"The only thing I can think of is that it is business-related," said Robert Fowler, another customer who went to the shop after he got word of the slayings. "It couldn't be personal." "

2. Teenager Shot in Head on SF Muni Bus
"A teenage boy was in extremely critical condition Thursday night after he was shot in the head on board a Muni bus in San Francisco.
Police say the teen was attempting to break up a fight among some other passengers on the Number 29 bus about 3:40pm. The gunfire broke out as the vehicle neared the intersection of Mission and Onondaga in the Outer Mission.
The suspected shooter -- also apparently a juvenile -- was captured about a block away and taken into custody."

Pistol-packing Senior Chases Off Mugger, Gets Charged for Unlicensed Gun
By Marcus Solis
(Bronx-WABC, November 5, 2003)

A mugger in the Bronx got quite a surprise when the 80-year-old man he attacked in an elevator pulled out a .38 caliber handgun. There was a struggle, a shot was fired, and now the elderly victim is being criminally charged.

Lester Campbell says the gun belonged to his mother, and that it was passed onto him when she died. And he said he would carry it with him when he went to cash checks.

Campbell had just cashed his Social Security check and gone to the supermarket near his house, when the mugger followed him into the elevator of his building. What the mugger didn't realize was that the octogenarian was packing heat.

And after Campbell pulled out his gun, a fierce struggle ensued.

Lester Campbell, Mugging Victim: "He tried to keep the barrel away from him, twisting and turning. And when I was going to pull it, see, I lose some grip. And that's when he started twisting and twisting."

4. HPD: Boy, 10, Shoots, Kills Friend, 10 (TX)
"HOUSTON -- A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his friend while they were alone in a north Houston home, police told News2Houston.
Officers said the boys were playing with a shotgun in the home in the 15200 block of Buckle Lane when one accidentally shot the other.
"The people that lived here had gone to the store, leaving two 10-year-old boys here alone. One of the boys, who is the son of the owner of the house or town home, found a shotgun hidden, at which time, he was playing with it. The gun discharged, striking the other child in the chest," said Sgt. H.G. Welch, with the Houston Police Department. "

5. Woman uses her new gun; two suspects face charges
http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=61859&ran=100781

PORTSMOUTH — Somewhere between a Food Lion and home, Temesha Greene noticed a van following her.

When she got to her driveway that August night, a man pulled out a gun.

Greene pulled out her own gun.

The man fired at her.

She fired back.

He missed.

She didn’t.

That night, officers found Emmitt M. Warren, 34, in a van near Greene’s house, suffering from gunshot wounds, according to court records. He was taken to a hospital and eventually was charged with attempted murder and weapons violations.

Dion C. Cameron, 35, was accused of driving the van and faces the same charges. Their cases were sent to a grand jury after a preliminary hearing Monday.

No charges were filed against Greene. The incident happened Aug. 9, shortly after Greene bought a house alarm system and her first gun.

The 26-year-old mother began worrying about the safety of her Peachtree neighborhood after she heard about several break-ins.

She ordered the .40-caliber Glock pistol in late July, and it arrived a few days later. She shot it for the first time at a range on Aug. 9.

At first, she said, holding the weapon felt strange. It scared her.

Then she started imagining the target picture was someone coming after her, and she felt more comfortable.

Later that night, someone did, according to court records and testimony Monday. Greene, her two sons and her boyfriend arrived home from a Food Lion about 11 p.m., according to testimony.

As they unpacked their Nissan Altima, a man appeared in the driveway.

Greene and her boyfriend, Cedric Williams, asked who it was, but the man said nothing. Through the back window of the car, Greene said, she saw the man pull out a weapon. She unlatched the Glock case on the floor of the car.

Shots rang out, several from each weapon. Williams ducked behind a tree, yelling for the boys, ages 8 and 9, to get down. Greene saw the man fall. The van started to pull away, and the man yelled for the driver to wait for him.

Greene called the police.

A gun was later found in her driveway, along with shell casings, according to testimony.

Officers tracked down the van and Warren on Fruitwood Court, and he was taken to a hospital, according to court papers.

On Monday, defense attorneys questioned whether Greene or Williams fired the gun that night. Greene said she was the shooter.

“I fired that gun,” she testified. “It had to have been more than five times.”

Michael Rosenberg, Cameron’s attorney, said there was not enough evidence to support charges against his client.

But General District Judge Morton Whitlow said there was and cited three elements.

A man testified that Cameron borrowed the van from him that weekend.

Warren was found shot in that van. And Greene and Williams testified that the shooter shouted for “Dion” and “Cam.” as he limped away.

After the hearing, Greene said she was relieved.

The events of that night don’t haunt her like they used to, she said, but she remains shaken by the violence she experienced.

She’s still working for a collections agency, but she’s been trying to sell her house and move.

In December, a grand jury will consider the charges against Warren and Cameron. “I prayed that he wouldn’t die,” Greene said, “and that when he doesn’t die, he has to stay in prison for a long time.”

14. China, Cuba, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc, etc,
have solve this pesky problem by limiting freedoms. Of course, the first freedom to go in every instance is the right to keep arms.

Off topic, but I found out last week that in Vietman, you are not allowed to own a motorcycle with an engine larger than 100cc. It seems the authorities don't want you having a faster bike than they have.

The lengths that authoritarians go to control their subjects is amazing.

18. Gee, wonder how many Cambodians
owned guns at any time in their history?

Amazing how absolutely phony history and the RKBA in this country seem to go hand in hand.

"The lengths that authoritarians go to control their subjects is amazing."
Not nearly as amazing as the absurd lengths some fetishists will go to to justify their fetish. Just this week, some were trying to pretend Gandhi was Ted Nugent in a loincloth.

20. Excellent Question - Quick History of an Unarmed Cambodia
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 11:50 AM by Oberst Klink
The history of Cambodia - short and sweet, starting in the 1st century AD. We can assume that the rulers have not allowed arms of any kind by the populace.

Fanan Empire - Indian invasion and conquest.

immediately followed by

Chenla Empire - Chinese invasion and conquest.

immediately followed by

Angkorian Empire - 2nd Indian invasion and conquest.

immediately followed by

Thailand and Vietnam Dominance, then the French rule.

Immediately followed by (you guess it)

Sihanouk Rule (very unpleasant) until 1970

immediately followed by

Khmar Rouge (very very unplesant, but par for course)

Today, the people of Cambodia, who are just as human as us and want freedom just like we do are still unarmed and the the whims of their oppressors.

Load of hooey?

Which fact do you dispute? Is that the best you can do?

This is an excellent example of a people who have been disarmed since their Neo-lithic period some 2000 years ago, during which they suffered at the hands of tyrants and despots.

Forgetting the historical facts of Cambodias rich cultural history, why would you want to continue to loose national elections?

Want to win the South? Drop the gun banning. Want to win swing states like Michigan? Drop the gun banning.

Want to stay out of power, wandering in the political wilderness for another 4 years OR MORE, keep pounding the drum of Gun Control.

"Want to win swing states like Michigan?"
You mean the Michigan where the NRA spent millions and Charlton Heston called for a lynch mob? Yeah....Al Gore won that.

Voters want gun control. The politicians banging this "gun rights" drum are the bigoted scum of the earth. You get into bed with the Tom DeLays and John AshKKKrofts of the world if you want to.

I'll stand over here with decent people like Al Gore, Diane Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Jim McGreevey, John Lewis, Luis Gutierrez, Barbara Boxer, Barbara Mikulski, Dennis Kuciniich, Jesse Jackson, Mario Cuomo, John Kerry, etc. etc....

It's no accident that just about every group of decent progressive people in America ended up on the NRA enemies list...or that so many are volunteering to join it.

33. "I can't convince the people I live and work with to vote D"
Let's see...

The twin towers were knocked down, California burned down, the national power grid melted down, the economy's in the toilet, three million jobs have been lost, the deficit is raging out of control, we're stuck in a war based on lies, the mission wasn't accomplished and the unelected wartime deserter who claimed it was now blaims the Navy for the claim, the people who actually attacked us on September 11 are running around scott-free, Halliburton and Bechtel are looting the treasury openly, the Bill of Rights has been trashed, open bigotry is having a renaissance, and we've lost just about every ally we had around the world.

"I can't convince the people I live and work with to vote D when gun control is always on the table."
Tell us, what WOULD make these folks stop obsessing about their guns?

"The NRA supports a lot of fine Democrats, by the way."
Funny, last time you guys tried to make a list, you ran dry after about half a dozen names...and you had to include a bunch of Zell Miller type DINOs and Dr. Dean who:
a) is closer to my position on guns than yours, and
b) won't get the NRA's support against Chimpy the drunk.

21. You Just Can't Please Some People
A while back, some pro-gunners bitched and moaned because this board was becoming cluttered with news stories showing the mayhem caused by guns. So I came up with the "GUNS IN THE NEWS" concept to group them all together - less clutter on the board, and those who wished to ignore them could just stay out of the thread.

And people STILL continue to bitch and moan.....

Investigators said the child, Priscilla Perez, was walking through the living room when someone fired shots through the door of the family's apartment.
Police said the child's aunt was also taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. She is pregnant and paramedics think the stress of her niece being shot could harm her health. "

19. Suspect In Fatal Ohio Workplace Shooting Arrested In Indiana
"A man suspected of shooting five people -- two fatally -- at a trucking company in suburban Cincinnati Thursday morning was arrested at an Indiana truck stop less than three hours later, police said.
Police said they arrested Joseph John Eschenbrenner -- also known as Tom West -- near Interstate 74 and New Point, Ind., about 50 miles away from the shooting scene.
The Lakeland, Fla.-based company said in a statement that Eschenbrenner resigned in November 2001. Police did not know why he left and people in the West Chester office did not know him, West Chester Police Chief John Bruce said.
A spokesman for a nearby school district said all schools locked or were monitoring the doors at all of its 19 buildings after the shootings. "

36. Update:
"As the suspect in a double-fatal workplace shooting sits in a local jail cell, investigators are conducting tests on two guns police found in his van hours later.
Joseph Eschenbrenner Jr., the suspect's father, said his son's former co-workers picked on him.
"There were a series of things going on that were driving Joey crazy and he blamed Watkins people for it," Eschenbrenner Jr. said from his home in Rolling Meadows, Ill., a Chicago suburb.
"He was firmly convinced that he was the most important driver they had in their fleet," the father said.
Eschenbrenner Jr. said he last spoke to his son about three years ago. He had received a note since then talking about a variety of problems his son was having after he left the company."
