How many guns do you own?
I have a Browning .22,a Lee Enfield .303,and a Remington .308. I used to use them when I was living in the country, but now that I live in the city, they just gather dust.

85. Before you buy the SW9VE
take a look at SW 3913 or 3914....they are a truly great 9mm. I have carried both the 9ve and a 3914. The 3914 is the most accurate 9mm I have ever owned and it has a single stack magazine so it is thin and easy to carry...just my $.02

Although apparently I'm to get grandpa's chrome-plated shotgun at some point. Maybe put it up on a couple of spikes over the door, if there's room.

Hopefully it's heavy enough to clobber an intruder over the head with, because I doubt it fires. :D

102. You may have a "marine" shotgun which would work fine...
Some manufacturers made shotguns (usually pump action) from stainless steel or chrome-plate for marine duty (to resist salt spray rust). Your gun probably works fine, but if you decide to sell, you should get a good price. BTW, over the door is where George Orwell recommended the placement of firearms for civilian use.

118. That's a pretty decent analogy.
I own a variety of weapons, and by variety I mean that they come in a variety of calibers--though there is a plurality of .22LR--and actions. Almost each of my guns differs mechanically from the others; I have a couple of striker-fired handguns, two SA semi-auto handguns (a Ruger 22/45 and a 1911), a DA/SA 9mm with a rotating barrel locking mechanism, a pump-action shotgun, an AR (with a .22LR bolt carrier insert; not as accurate as a dedicated .22 upper, but way cheaper), a bolt-action .22 and a lever-action .22. The next gun I buy--and that might take a while at present--will probably be a revolver, because I don't have one yet. Though I also have a liking of historical military firearms, and I'd like to collect some of those. I did briefly have a Soviet (1933 Tula) M1895 Nagant revolver (a mechanical oddity in itself) but I bought and cleaned that one up as a gift for a friend of mine who's an Eastern European History major.

It's why I do a mental facepalm whenever somebody busts out with the "how many guns do you need?" challenge. I like guns as pieces of machinery, and historical artifacts. Every gun I own is unique in some way, in the context of my collection. The whole notion that a reason--let alone the only reason--to amass an "arsenal" is to shoot a bunch of people is just silly. In just about any situation in which shooting people is a likelihood, you shouldn't need more than two guns; one primary, and one backup in case your primary malfunctions. Carrying more than two is for amateurs, since any gun beyond two is taking up carrying capacity that you could be using for ammunition for your first two, or just leaving off so as not to weigh yourself down.

And if you look at recorded instances of spree shootings, you'll see that even when the shooters bring more than two guns, they rarely end up using the excess. For example, Buford Furrow, the white supremacist piece of shit who committed the North Valley Jewish Community Center shooting in L.A., brought a stack of semi-automatic weapons, but in the end he used only the Norinco Uzi knockoff in the Center, and a Glock 26 to later kill mail carrier Joseph Ileto. Charles Whitman took seven guns to the top of the University of Texas clock tower, but only used two of them. In practice, individuals can commit atrocities quite readily with two or even one gun; limiting the number of firearms any one person can own serves no purpose to curb these horrors. Conversely, people may own multiple firearms for various legitimate purposes. A varmint rifle is no good for hunting deer, and a deer rifle is no good for hunting birds or shooting skeet, and the shotguns that are, are no good for turkey, etc. etc. And that's even provisionally accepting the mistaken notion that the Second Amendment is about hunting or sport shooting.

The fact is that, very often, once you start owning guns, you look to acquire more. Not more of the same, but guns that are different from those you already own. Much like car collectors don't feel the urge to own several examples of the same model of car, but want different cars so they can see how they compare against each other, possibly for different people. If I were obsessed with preparing against The End Of The World As We Know It, like so many right-wing survivalist types, I wouldn't be spending good money on more guns; I'd get the guns I considered best suited--perhaps multiple copies--and spend the rest of my money on ammunition and reloading supplies for those particular guns. Owning many guns doesn't make you better at killing, or more likely to engage in it, any more than collecting postage stamps makes you better at sending letters, or more likely to write and mail them. It probably just means you're a collector.

30. None. I don't have anything against them,
I just don't trust them in my hands. I assume that if someone breaks into my home, I will either be 1) at work or 2) asleep. In the first instance a gun isn't going to help me and in the second, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I shot my wife or children in a sleepy confused state of mind.

I can't think of a single household back where I'm from in Canada that does not have a deer caliber rifle (30-30, 30-06, .303, .308etc) and a 12 guage. City folk don't tend to own, but outside the cities people certainly have firearms.

32. I don't own any guns. I have no problem with gun ownership, as long as the person
owning the gun is responsible with it, but I've never had the desire or felt the need to own one. The stories I read about children or toddlers finding a loaded and shooting another child just make my blood run cold. IMO, the person who didn't secure the weapon needs to have charges filed against them.

All of them I inherited or were given by family members.

I have a Browning High Power, a Remington 3200 Competition Skeet barrel set with .410, 28, 20, and 12 gauge over and under barrels, a 7mm Spanish Mauser modified with a Monte Carlo stock, a Remington 870 12 gauge, a 1911 .45 that was my grandfather's service pistol when he was a motorcycle cop back in the 30's, and at least one other shotgun that I don't even know the make or model.

I miss the old single shot .22 rifle I had as a kid. I have no idea what happened to it.

Guns are the root of much evil. They embolden criminals, turn law-abiding citizens into murderers, and allow total nutjobs to rip holes in humanity with ease. I grew out of the "guns and flags" hypnotic spell in about 10th grade.

I also carried and fired various guns in the army including M-16s, Colt 45s, M60 machine guns, 50 cal machine guns, mortars, the LAW, etc.

There is no shortage of far better, more creative, non-lethal hobbies available.

46. About as many as my neighbors, more than some, less than some
Here, in rural West Virginia, virtually every home has firearms. Also, this state has a concealed-cary licensing system that allows quite a few people to cary unseen firearms and of course unless a city ordinance prohibits it open cary is legal anywhere in the state.

If I thought like you then I wouldn't even shoot at public or private ranges with other people for fear they would see what I have and follow me home.

96. That's pretty awsome.
I don't see any need for any SD round other than the 10mm. Problem of course is that someone would paint you as a bad ass looking for a fight if you had to actually shoot somebody. That's one reason mine stays home now.

I'm guessing yours is not for daily carry though.;)

98. :) Yeah, I think so too....
IMO a stainless, full-size P220 isn't well-suited to concealed carry, it's just too big and too heavy. I'll stick with the P245 as an EDC....
This guy will mostly be a range/safe queen, though if hunting in rough country it might make a suitable bear gun.

The guys that own my range have been drooling about this project and I've promised if they buy the ammo, they get a chance to shoot it. I expect we're going to blow the hell out of some melons....:D As a SD round, I think the 10mm it too prone to over-penetration, and will carry too far in the event of a miss, to make it useful...one of the reasons the FBI wanted it was to shoot through car doors/windshields...the main reason they shied away from it was that it was causing many of their less dedicated shooters to develop some bad issue with anticipating recoil. They're a lot of fun to shoot, but they can be a bit brutal.

"Problem of course is that someone would paint you as a bad ass looking for a fight if you had to actually shoot somebody."

Not something I'm terribly concerned with. Texas passed a civil immunity statute....IF I did have to shoot someone, then assuming I was found not criminally culpable, then I would be immune from civil action.

117. Well, the FBI chose it as a defensive round...
and the "10mm lite" loads duplicate the most common .40 S&W loads, so you'd have to have an idiot prosecutor and a gullible judge and jury for that to even have a chance of flying, though even then I doubt it would bear on the question of justifiability. Of course, there are places where such a confluence could exist, and I know of at least one case in which a prosecutor tried to make an issue of it.

typo fixed

Thread pinned at the top of this forum says:

Since we re-organized our forums, DU now has two forums for discussions relating to Guns and 2nd Amendment issues. Each of those forums has a specific purpose. Help us keep posts on-topic in each of those forums.

Discussion of gun-related public policy issues or the use of firearms for self-defense belong in the Guns Forum.

Personal-interest discussion about guns and weaponry should be posted in the Outdoor Life Group. By "personal interest" I mean, any discussion that is unrelated to public policy, such as: Posting pictures of guns or discussing the leisure activities of hunting or shooting.

"How many guns do you own?" does not appear to raise a public policy issue.

130. and then there's the truth

A poll was once put on this site asking people to indicate whether they owned firearms.

A tiny fraction of the members of this website (we have no idea who they were, or whether they might have encountered some death by misadventure tombstone since that time, which the rate of such demises in this particular forum might suggest many did) responded to the poll, and a majority of them said "yes".

BTW, Swede, most U.S. cities have indoor ranges where you could shoot the .22, and centerfire rifle ranges within a modest driving distance. I'm not sure what the situation is in Canada, but I'd think there'd still be ranges available.
