They are both dangerous. They are both deadly.
Tobacco actually does hurt and kill lots innocents every year.
Tobacco causes sudden infant death syndrome.
Tobacco has no useful qualities.
Tobacco hurts all people who use it, and children near the user.
It is an addictive drug.
It is the cause of fires which kill people.
It is really easy to get.

All negatives, nothing positive.

Tobacco kills and injures more people than assault weapons, LOTS more.

Guns have many positive qualities and they are protected by the Constitution.

3. Tim, maybe you should post a link to the other thread in question.
I wish this could be posted in the GD forums. Maybe we can post a link to THIS thread on that one? At least more people would get the point then.

5. Well if you going to ban tobacco you
might as well add alcohol as well. I see no positives in it either.

6. Tobacco, alcohol, swimming pools, cars
pet dogs, small toys that you can choke on, all unhealthy food, ladders, peanuts, etc.

There are many things that should be banned before "assault weapons" going by the numbers.

7. And about 95% of the people on DU don't want tobacco banned.
I call that an inconsistency, to put it nicely.

8. Hey, I'm consistent
I don't want a renewal of the so-called "assault weapons" ban, or a ban on any other class of firearms, and I don't want a ban on tobacco either.

See, I'm a smoker, and I do my level best to ensure that the only person who is going to be negatively affected by my filthy habit is myself. I don't smoke in my house, I don't smoke in my car, I certainlky don't smoke in other peoples' houses (unless they smoke themselves), and even when I'm puffing away outdoors I try to stay downwind of any non-smokers. I try to find a trash can to dump my butts in, too, when there's one available.

Similarly, I do my utmost to ensure that nobody else becomes the unwilling victim of my firearms habit (unless such a person were to present an imminent threat of grievous bodily harm to myself, my family or any apparently innocent individual in my presence).

And in John Stuart Millsian fashion, I figure that as long as I'm not harming anyone else, I should be to engage in whatever activity I like, right?

11. No I don't want either banned.
Then again, I am not wishing to live in a psychotic state where everything is banned "fer the chilruns" or "for your safety!".
