Would You Make This Information Public?
Would You Make This Information Public?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was messing around on Facebook today and I saw that they have a new toy. It’s an application that lets you list your favorite albums or movies or books yada, yada, yada. One of the lists they have is “Five Things You’d Never Leave The House W/Out”. Just for giggles I put my top five in to see if the software supported them. They were
1. My Gun
2. Spare ammunition
3. Folder
4. Multitool
5. Flashlight.
Believe it or not every single one was supported. I decided not to complete the list because I really don’t want that information out there.

My question is; am I being overly paranoid? Is there anyone here that would make that information publicly available? What would be the purpose? Obviously, I’m talking about the firearm specific answers I don’t care if you know that I always have my keys and phone.

The thing that I find really interesting is that those answers wouldn’t be available if somebody hadn’t gone to the trouble to add them to the list. That tells me that somebody out there wanted everyone on their friends list to know that they carry all the time bad enough to add it to the list.

So give me your thoughts would you or wouldn’t you publish that information? And why.

7. Last week the NRA called me at least four times every day...
I call screen and avoid answering calls that solicit money for the NRA-ILA. If the call was truly important, they would have left a message. My basic rule is that I always wait to see if the caller is willing to leave a message. No message, no answer. Helps me keep my blood pressure at a reasonable level.

I am an NRA member since I feel they do a lot for the shooting sport and I enjoy the articles in their monthly magazine that deal with firearms and the history of firearms.

But I have to admit, I came damn close to picking up the phone last week and canceling my membership.

So far this week, no calls. Hopefully, they gave up on me. But they are at the very least persistent.

thanks.

In the small town I live, cell phones are iffy. When I use my cell phone I often have to walk outside. We keep hearing that a new cell phone tower will be built near the town. We keep waiting.

33. Love to hear the "logic" behind that statement.
Owning a gun is not required for NRA membership. The NRA does not know about any guns you might or might not own.

4. Most likely the list is populated from other lists. Makes programing easer.
I really see nothing wrong with it if you wish give that info. And, if you can have your page set so only approved people can read it.

6. Look, the government probably already knows you have firearms...
do a Google search on government data mining.

Are you an NRA member? Do you buy ammo and use a credit or debit card? Do you subscribe to a gun magazine? Do you post on Pro-gun sites? Do you belong to a gun range?

More than likely they have enough info to know. The problem is that they have so much info, they may not be able to sort through all of it. You may be out of their radar range for now.

Is it time to panic and bury your firearms in the back yard? No. Don't get your panties in a wad. But just be aware that privacy in the United States isn't what it was in your father's day.

Don't panic about Obama and the Democrats. They have their hands full without trying to implement draconian gun laws. Also realize that a good number of Democrats in Congress are pro-gun. Also, the Supreme Court has been somewhat favorable to the right to own firearms.

8. I'm Sorry That Wasn't My Intent At All
I was thinking more along the lines of posting information that lets thieves no that I have firearms in my home available for the stealing (even if they ARE in a safe)

10. Sorry, I missed your intent totally...
Views differ. Some people are very careful about revealing that they own firearms to strangers. On the other hand some people are not afraid to advertise that fact, the philosophy being, "If you bust into my house and I'm there, your actions might be hazardous to your health".

You go with what you're comfortable with. Personally, I don't have a Facebook or MySpace page. But then, I'm 63. You could encounter a problem if you post info that shows you have firearms on Facebook and later mention your plans to be on vacation for a few weeks.

My daughter and my grand kids have pages and love them and they also love texting on phones. Half the time they are pissed off at some message they got from someone and it's amazing how fast rumors propagate today.

I avoid all that crap. Homie is too old to play dat. Most people I know are aware that I own firearms. I don't hide that fact. On one hand, I might regret that fact, but on the other some fool may decide not to break into my home while I'm there.

Firearms can be excellent defense weapons but the best plan is to avoid ever having to use them.

A fairly good safe should keep the neighborhood kids from your firearms but even a really expensive one will probably present no challenge to a professional thief. If you only have a small number of firearms, the pro will probably figure it's a waste of his talent.

14. One important thing about Facebook privacy
is to allow ONLY FRIENDS to see your profile and photos, and then be choosy about who you send friend requests to or accept them from.

If you have your privacy settings set to "friends of friends" or "everyone" instead of just your friends, then anyone with a web connection can see pics of the inside of your house (what you own, how hard it would be to break in), what your kids look like, know when you're on vacation, what your hobbies are, etc. Only share that with people you trust.

28. I'm more worried about the Republicans
than my fellow Democrats. Gun control is the ultimate Racist, Republican issue- the rich don't need guns, they've got gated communities, bodyguards and the like. not that there aren't idiots in the Democratic Party, but the Bradys are Republicans, Reagan signed the most draconian gun laws when he was governor in California as response to the Black Panthers going about armed, GWB would have signed a re authorization of the AWB if it had reached his desk (or so he said), and one poster on this forum has well documented the racist roots of gun control. For the Republicans the beauty of the issue is that a few extremists on our side know so little and speak so much that it lets them posture as defenders of RKBA when most of them can't wait until people of color and/or belonging to less than the top 5% of incomes can't legally have firearms.

9. Clarification
It never occurred to me that anyone would think I was worried about the government finding out I have guns. I have a CHP so that's a forgone conclusion.
As for the government taking my guns, I was in the Army for 14 years. I know what kind of a jug-frak they can turn the simplest thing into. Hell would freeze SOLID before I'd believe the same people who couldn't organize a piss test during peace time could coordinate a predawn raid on the homes of 100+ MILLION gun owners.

Yeah that, as an issue, never crossed my mind when I was typing this post

11. I'll go you one further
I think I tried the same thing, and it actually supported the specific sub-model of firearm I carry, in the specific caliber: a S&W M&P40c. If I carried the 9mm or .357SIG version, I suspect those would pop up too.

To answer the question, though, no, I would not share that information. The people of whom I don't mind that they know (mainly because they carry too) already know, and nobody else needs to know (or why would I carry concealed?).

19. how odd

I know what's top of my list.

Health card. It's picture identification, and if I'm in medical trouble, it provides access to my medical records (in rudimentary form at present; we're still working on electronic medical records). I can stick it in a pocket and not worry about carting around anything more, if I'm just going to an event or such.

Not mine, obviously ... mine expired recently and I gotta get down the the office and get a new one before my eye surgery in two weeks. (If I don't make it, they'll call me "self-pay" and bill me, and then I get to go in with the new health card after, and cancel the bill. All of it.)

I know, it sounds like bragging, but we Canadians just want the neighbours to know that this is possible.

Oh, and of course, it's always nice to bring a little of what really matters into the dank recesses of this place.

23. Perhaps you could start a post in GD on Canadian heathcare...
The amount of bullshit we hear every day is overwhelming.

The only news program that honestly looked at foreign healthcare systems was the Low Dobbs program on CNN. This amazed me!

If more Americans were to actually see how well heathcare works in other countries, they would demand change. I'm sure the people we elect realize this. It's sad that they don't serve the voters who put them in office but instead bow to kiss the feet of the all powerful corporations that own them.

Two videos from his program:

25. I'll have to spend more time checking out those forums...
but thanks for the effort.

I think we are going to end up with some truly half-assed system of heath care that cost as much or more than our current system and guarantees that the pharmaceutical companies and the medical insurance industry continues to make profit off those who are suffering.

Sometimes Americans are a lot like sheep which the big corporations and the media can herd in any direction they wish. Our educational system sucks, perhaps because those in power really don't want well educated citizens. The issues are complected. Fox News and Rush Limbaugh make these issues simple. The average American doesn't seem to understand that what he hears from Fox and Rush is bullshit.

Sad, because most Americans have access to the web. If they took the time they could research and find the truth.

37. You know we do emergency medical care regardless of ability to pay right?
Comes out of our property taxes. Yeah, the hospital may attempt to recover costs after the fact, but if you can't pay, you can't pay. There are collections and credit restrictions on what they can do to recover medical costs.

No emergency medical care is withheld while someone fumbles through your purse or wallet for an insurance card.
