7. And you would rather people die then use guns in self-defense.
Would you have preferred that the manager got run over?

I'm sure they will explain this us directly.

11. Seems you forgot the small matter of "assault with a deadly weapon"
Edited on Sun Sep-06-09 03:21 PM by friendly_iconoclast
From the linked article, according to court records:

The store’s manager told police she saw a woman leaving the store with the bag of meat products. The manager yelled for the woman to stop, but she didn’t.

The manager followed the suspect to her car and started writing down the license plate number. The suspect started the car and drove toward the manager, striking her. The manager fell onto the car’s hood and held on as the suspect accelerated through the parking lot toward an exit onto Sterling Avenue.

Hearing screams for help and seeing the manager clinging to the car’s hood, the bystander blocked the exit with his vehicle. He approached the suspect and told her to get out of her car.

The woman tried to drive around his vehicle. The bystander, who told police he feared for his life and the life of the manager, pulled out a 9mm handgun and yelled again for her to stop. He then fired through the driver’s side window, striking the suspect in the left shoulder and neck.

shares, we can come to one of two conclusions about your post:

1. Automobiles in your area are all made from Nerf foam,

or

2. You really do think people are less dead if they get run over as opposed to being shot.

13. Every step another choice.
Steal, escape, civilian pursuit, assault with deadly force, third party civilian assault with deadly force.

Now, does Joe Vigilante get a medal or a mug shot?

It depends on what kind of society you are promoting.

16. Ah, but there's the rub- you elided the assault by the shoplifter.
Edited on Sun Sep-06-09 03:55 PM by friendly_iconoclast
The bystander didn't shoot her because she was running off with a bag of strip steaks.
He would have been totally unjustified in doing so and he should then have been arrested and charged.

Ms. Shoplifter had the chance to just drive off, but chose to attack the manager
with her car and drive off with her on the hood, and then attempt to take out the bystander as well.
Fearing for his life, he then used proportional, potentially deadly force to stop Ms. Shoplifter (Now
With Death Race 2000 Add-On!)

What kind of society are *you* trying to promote when you cavil about someone trying to stop a
sociopath willing to commit assault with a deadly weapon to get away with shoplifting?

I'm promoting a society where good Samaritans possibly save the life of good Samaritans.

You are promoting a society where no one can defend their livelihood or their lives.

12. Did you read the article?
The thief struck the manager of the store with her car. Why did you ignore that? Because it didn't fit in with your world-view?

You probably think the manager should allowed her to run off with the items she stole.

14. The store manager is employee of the month. He pursued without regard to risk to himself.
So that he could get her plate number and facilitate her capture by the authorities.

She was wrong to try to run him over.

Do we like the fact that an armed bystander wanted to get involved?

We do if we love guns and ammo and instant justice without lawyers or a courthouse or statutes involved.

"We do if we love guns and ammo and instant justice without lawyers or a courthouse or statutes involved."

I believe in justice, lawyers, etc. But that's not the issue. The CCW holder believed the manager was in danger and acted. Do think people should assist each other as well as believing people don't have the right to defend themselves?

19. I think the trigger happy are always under a burden of justifying themselves.
If I love guns and ammo and shooting, and the opportunity presents itself for me to do what I love doing AND be seen as a hero for it, I guess I would welcome that opportunity.

I presume it would either make me feel great or I would experience an instant revulsion upon seeing the reality of what I had done and long for a do-over.

That moment of I Must Kill must be a glorious rush to the extent it validates why I am carrying a gun around with me to begin with.

I just need to get my We Were In Mortal Danger on good and strong for the inevitable investigation to follow.

31. You watch too much teevee
"shoot out the tires"...fuck what an idiotic thing that is on so many levels..

1. shooting toward concrete and steel (tires are attached to wheels, attached to frames, attached to cars), where is that round going to go? Nobody knows.

2. The chances of hitting a moving tire is low.

3. a flat tire will not stop a moving car, it may however put it out of control to ram another person or vehicle.

I wouldn't try to shoot at a moving car under most circumstances, but to try to shoot out a tire is for clint eastwood or deputy dog....completely violates all rules of safety.

36. Shoot out the tires? Really? Stop getting your gun "facts" from TV.
Have you ever considered what is inside the rubber tire.

Oh yeah a hardened steel RIM. Aka bullet deflector.

Shoot a tire at point blank range and you run a nice chance of your own bullet striking you in the chest.

37. Have you considered the construction of a tire?
Handguns are not known for having great penetration. That's why bullet resistant vest that can be swiss cheesed by rifles are able to stop pistol bullets.

First the tread is made from very tough rubber and synthetics. Then the thread has a belt of steel cables under it. It is unlikely that most handgun bullets would penetrate through the thread.

The tires is sitting on pavement. Bullets tend to ricochet off pavement. And the tire is mounted on a hardened steel rim.

You might stand a chance of causing a flat if you hit the sidewall of the tire, as that is the weakest part of a tire. But that is a with a target area of about three or four inches across the ring, if you are lucky enough to be shooting perpendicular to the tire. If you are shooting at an angle, then you have to penetrate more of the sidewall to caue a flat.

The wheel is in motion, making precise shot placement difficult.

Even if you do cause a flat, cars can still drive on the rims.

Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 01:02 PM by rd_kent
You have seen too many movies: FYI, it is very difficult to shoot out a tire with a handgun. They usually bounce off and become a danger to bystanders.

Then you go on to snark that the shooter really WANTED an opportunity to shoot a person. You, my friend, are an asshole.

I guess that in your utopia of rainbows and gumdrops, you dont face situations like these. I hope I never have to rely on you to make a split second decision to save my life.

40. Taking your "logic" chain to it's full extension,
if someone has a heart attack in public, I should refrain from performing CPR and just take good notes. After all, a doctor is sure to be along any moment now... And we certainly wouldn't want an "untrained" civilian to take any action that might muddy the waters... Even if they could save a life...

Your attitude and philosophy sicken me.

23. Obviously you didn't read the story at ALL. The manager was a "she."
And she may be alive right now because the attacker was stopped. If you're willing to run somebody down over a bag of stolen meat, what are you going to do to prevent that person from describing you to the police on charges of attempted murder?

And "capital punishment for shoplifting?" Bullshit. While any gunfire carries the risk of death, the rescuer shot the attacker in the shoulder, a disabling shot. She's very much alive and now in jail. This sort of thing shows just how unreasonable your arguments are.

33. I hope you are never the victim of a violent attack,
if you are the 1 in 3 who is, I hope someone stands by and takes notes so that your attacker may be brought to justice/have his day in court someday. I hope you are still around to assist in the prosecution in person and not just in pictures and autopsy reports to assist in the prosecution...either way so glad the accused gets a fair trial...justice is sweet, huh?

34. You're so right, it's much better not to try to intervene while the incident is in progress
Much better to let the chips fall where they may and then convict the shoplifter for vehicular manslaughter (pleaded down from second-degree murder) than to intervene before the manager's life could put in further jeopardy. At least that way, we could have been certain the shoplifter had malicious intent, because, y'know, when somebody runs her car into someone else and continues to accelerate while the victim clings to the hood, you just can't be certain there's malice involved, can you?
