Couple goes out drinking. Hilarity ensues.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/lauderhill/sfl-lauderhill-shooting-b083109,0,1548907.story

An argument between two acquaintances over the right to carry a gun ended when one of them shot the other from behind a bathroom door, police say.

Travis Lanoir Williams, 28, was taken to Broward General Medical Center after the Sunday night shooting. His spleen and a kidney had to be removed.

At some point Sunday night, Roberts panicked because she couldn't find the pistol she usually carried in her purse, said Lauderhill Police Capt. Rick Rocco.

She later found it in the back seat of the group's car.

That sparked an argument between Roberts and Williams about her having the gun, which Roberts said she needed for protection, Rocco said.

The group then stopped at a house on the 2000 block of Northwest 24th Terrace because Roberts' daughter needed to use the bathroom, authorities said. The argument continued as Roberts entered the bathroom to assist her daughter, police said.

"They were arguing through the door and she got really upset. That's when she fired her gun, hitting Mr. Williams in the upper shoulder," Rocco said.

Geez when will those silly gun grabbers ever learn. You never argue about the right to bear arms on date night.

1. If she hit him in the shoulder, why did his spleen and kidney have to be removed?
Something here doesn't add up.

10. There's more doesn't add up
Personally, I'm inclined to think there's a lot more to this story than either party involved in the shooting is letting on. Or indeed the Lauderhill PD. The charge is attempted first-degree murder; that implies premeditation. The way the article tells, it sounds like second-degree.

Bottom line, though: drunk people and guns, bad combo.

32. Couple tough pieces of bone in the shoulder
and the shoulder could generally describe anything from the sternum up and out to the top of the shoulder for reporting purposes. A fragment of the bullet may have gone in some odd direction after hitting bone.

Maybe if he hadn't been drunk, he'd have known when it was time to shut his big yap.
And if she hadn't been drunk... Let me put it this way: anyone think that maybe irresponsible use of alcohol may have a played a more than trivial part in this incident?

28. Seriously, maybe it was a translation error.
There's a large hispanic population in that area. It's not so far fetched that someone wrote "shoulder" instead of "hip" (large joint) when writing the story.

What's not surprising is most people seem to think the victim had to be standing up straight while the shooter was shooting straight (parallel to the ground).

9. It appears that she was carrying illegally.
There is no mention that she had a CCW. Usually, if the shooter has one, the media will mention it. Therefore, I conclude that she probably didn't have one. Therefore, she was probably carrying illegally.

The pro-RKBA folks here do NOT support illegal carrying of guns.

1. As a result of this incident all "assault weapons" should be banned

2. The woman was carrying a gun to make up for her small penis

3. This wouldn't have happened in Canada

$. We need to stop all production of new firearms and wait 500 years for the ones we have now to wear out then we'll be safe and this will never happen again.

Are you happy now grabbers?

30. You guys must be getting so frustrated, always waiting to charge into defense of your gun rights
and most of the time you can't even get anybody to bite here. I know so many gun owners that are so paranoid of having their guns taken away, but I almost never hear from anybody who wants to do that, including myself. I just wanna stay out of the way of you crazies.

31. Actually
Each and every one of those points has ben brought up here by a grabber. One grabber posts every news story he finds in which a gun was used to kill or rob someone, and posts exactly what I said about banning all further production of firearms. I was just making light of them

39. Thats not the way I see it.
For everyone of these "grabber" posts there seem to be 10 posts expressing your point of view. Its a bit of overkill. You guys look obsessed.

My brother is the same way. He is a big hunter. Good for him. He once took my son deer hunting, and was impressed when my son dropped a deer on his first shot. He really thought it would antagonize me that he took my son hunting. Not because I ever expressed anything remotely approximating that opinion, but because I am a liberal/Democrat. So he attributes this to me, which is totally unfounded. I do not begrudge him his gun/hunting hobby, but what I do regret is that his paranoia about this whole situation has driven him to the dark side, made him a follower of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, because they are so good at feeding his paranoia.

33. We "can't get anybody to bite"?
Au contraire. You are one among many who has failed to understand the position of pro-RKBA types on this board. Nobody here is realistically afraid of ATF agents, let alone (gasp!) UN troops, going door to door confiscating privately owned firearms. Not going to happen. What we are concerned about is legislation being rammed through Congress* that will halt production, import and sale by federally licensed dealers of certain types of firearm that we would have liked to have been able to continue buying.

* - Probably as a rider on some "must-pass" legislation to which the rider bears little or no relevance. Because gun control proponents may decry that tactic when it's used, say, to tack a rule change permitting lawful carry in National Parks onto a bill concerning credit card reform, but they'll happily support that very same tactic when it tacks legislation prohibiting a type of firearm used in a negligible amount of crime onto a crime prevention bill.

Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 02:31 PM by billh58
hits just keep on comin':

Naked Man, 91, Holds Drunken Intruder at Gunpoint in Fla.

authorities say naked man, 91, held a drunken intruder at gunpoint until help arrived

LAKE WORTH, Fla. September 20, 2009 (AP)

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/WaterCooler/wireStory?id=8622971

And the rest of the story:

Thompson would've made it out of the whole ordeal completely unscathed if, when the deputies told him to drop the gun, it hadn't accidentally gone off, sending a tiny bullet fragment ricocheting off the concrete pool deck and into Thompson's right shin.

34. Kinda dumb for cops to say drop the firearm...
he did it and it fired. must have been an old firearm without a transfer bar. Modern revolvers won't fire when dropped because trigger needs to be pulled to raise transfer bar otherwise the firing pin is disconnected from the hammer.

Maybe it would have been better for the cops to say "put the firearm on the ground" or "set the firearm down and step back".

35. From the
article: "This gave homeowner Robert E. Thompson, 91, time to jump out of bed, grab his gun, a .38-caliber revolver loaded with hollow-point bullets, and to phone the police. "

Maybe he had the hammer pulled back when he dropped it...?

36. Agreed however modern revolvers use a transfer bar.
Even with hammer back, even if the hammer latch fails and hammer falls forward the weapon will not fire unless transfer bar is raised.

In a modern firearm the hammer doesn't hit the primer it actually can never reach the primer.

The hammer hits a transfer bar which hits the cartridge. If trigger is no pulled the transfer bar is lowered so there is nothing to "transfer" the energy to primer.

Must have been a rather old revolver but judging by the age of the owner if he acquired it when he was in his 20s it likely is old enough to not have a transfer bar.
