N.H. man shoots up Lynn eatery
By Robin Kaminski / The Daily Item

LYNN -- A New Hampshire man who was denied service at a Chinese restaurant Saturday, left in a rage and returned with an AK-47, opening fire at customers and employees, police said.

Anthony Gobbi, 30, of 90 Burley Park Drive, East Wakefield, NH, was charged with 15 counts of assault with intent to murder, carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded, high-capacity firearm, carrying a loaded firearm.

Gobbi is expected to be arraigned today at Lynn District Court.

According to police, employees at China Lion at 8 Market St., refused to serve Gobbi alcohol around 12:15 a.m., because he was believed to have been intoxicated. Angry for being denied service, Gobbi stormed out of the establishment and reportedly returned with the high-powered rifle and began firing shots.

Police say customers and employees managed to tackle Gobbi to the ground and wrestled the rifle away from him. No injuries were reported.

No further information was released by police Sunday night.

13. I can't believe that place is still around.
I know people don't go there for the food, but the lot's always full, so I think there's a brothel in the back.

I do door at 47 Central, next to Cal's News Friday/Saturday nights. Nice to think the next person you turn away may come back with an AK.

I work down the block, so the next person you turn away might be a DUer (I got kicked out of Anthony's in Swampscott last month, but instead of pulling a kalashnikov I called Anthony). I have to admit I don't feel any less safe in Lynn because of this.

There's nothing like a shooting to bring people together. I don't have a Mass license though, hope that isn't a problem like in swampscott.

5. If the article is correct in that it was an authentic fully auto AK-47, it could've been a massacre.
It's amazing that they stopped him before he got that far.

Seriously, I would not want to be a Lynn cop. Corrupt as hell, but they deal with some real crazies in that city.

42. Most likely a semi-auto clone.
Full auto AK-47s exist in extremely small numbers here in the states while the semi-auto clones are quite popular and plentiful.

9. They arrested him?
Well, that's just nuts! How else have we been carefully taught to solve our problems? Here's Mr. Gobbi, unreasonably denied his inviolate right to alcohol, he exercised another sacred right, and tried to correct this injustice by the application of overwhelming violence. It's going to work in Afghanistan, according to much wiser people than me (here and on the teevee), so why shouldn't it work when a man can't get a fuzzy navel?

37. Indeed
I've been shot at, and it is a terrifying experience. I can't imagine running toward someone shooting, unless perhaps the shooter was focused on others and I thought I could flank them. Still, I'm not sure that I could muster the courage. The people who disarmed this man should receive awards for heroism.

11. there goes the neighborhood
At least the Dragon Inn's still safe. There was another shooting last summer where nobody was hurt, so if there's one thing to say for gun control it produces lousy marksmen (although the perp was from NH so he didn't really have an excuse)

12. That guy sounds a lot like the guy who used to carry a piece in the Chinese restaurant I used to go
to. One reason I stopped was due to wackos like this who were unstable and even management was afraid of. The one I knew shot through his trailer and through other trailers in a park. He went to jail for a while, but I'm sure that just made him more angry.

At least, I can't, without sitting there being all paranoid about who is going to lose it and go after people with a knife or a gun or something.

Anyway, I'm glad the patrons subdued him. He's probably lucky they didn't all beat the holy living hell out of him before the cops came.

26. Lynn, Lynn, the city of Sinn
You'll never come out, the way you went in!

I noted in the comments that Mr Gobbi was a native of Lynn or thereabouts. We get a lot of these in NH - "bad boys" who move to NH for a while to chill out and change their residency and driver's license. A NH addy and license can save you thousands a year on car insurance alone - and most drivers in NH are not required to have insurance at all!
Not to mention that the Mass. Registry is way screwed up, so it's easy to shed a DWI or 2 by moving your license around. And those pesky ol' felonies can sometimes be taken care of by similar means.

North Conway is loaded with Lynners, too. Hell, the registry in NH is so screwed up they made major errors on my license that it took the MA registry 4 days to straighten out. I've heard it took some people a month to get their's fixed.

38. UPDATE

China Lion shooting suspect held without bail

By Robin Kaminski / The Daily Item

LYNN - The 30-year-old New Hampshire man charged with opening fire inside China Lion restaurant Saturday was ordered held without bail during his arraignment Monday morning in Lynn District Court.

Prosecutors say Anthony Gobbi, of East Wakefield, N.H., went into China Lion restaurant early Saturday morning and was extremely intoxicated. He was harassing customers and employees.

Gobbi, who had ordered a drink, was denied service when he was unable to produce identification.

Prosecutors say then left the restaurant and was yelling he was denied service because he was white.

Reports say Gobbi then retrieved an AK-47 and Glock handgun from his truck. He walked back into the restaurant and began firing at the ceiling. Customers and employees were ducking and hiding under tables. One customer was able to get Gobbi out of the restaurant and take away the weapon even as Gobbi continued to fire outside hitting a jewelry store and several parked cars.

Prosecutors said during his arraignment they believe he got the weapons from relatives in New Hampshire and that he was going to kill himself.

Gobbi, who was wearing a blue denim shirt over a T-shirt, was represented by a court-appointed lawyer and is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing Dec. 15.
