Here is the reality of a self-defense shooting as recorded in a 911 call.

1. I just figured that everyone secretly wishes to kill someone.
Gun nuts and otherwise.

2. I have on occasion harbored a wish to kill a specific individual
But never acted on it. I've never had a general wish to kill some random person. I'm so gentle and non-violent I even carefully evict spiders from my house.

3. I don't even evict them.
Any enemy of Mosquitoes is a friend of mine. I do however, own a number of guns. So far, all I've managed to kill with them is the center of a whole bunch of paper targets.

but I could easily make exceptions for the likes of Bush or Cheney.

18. Well, even I must admit that it is amusing but I never claimed to be Buddhist

Just that I try not to kill innocent creatures.

Dick, George, Donny, Bernie, Carl, Condi et all are not innocent.

5. Sounds bloodthirsty to me.
I bet she has a small penis, too. It probably accounts for her homicidal rage and gloating.

6. What she says toward the end brought me ever-so-slightly to tears
Edited on Mon Dec-07-09 10:03 PM by slackmaster
Real anguish in her voice, which is pretty much how I think I'd feel in a similar situation. Self-defense training can open your eyes to the reality of violence.

11. That lady is a true victim
her life was in danger and the last thing she wanted to do was take a life. She wasn't protecting property that could be replaced. She was reduced to her last option. Even so, my guess is she will suffer from PTSD. I wish her the best and hope others are never forced to do what she did.

17. She was burning with conflict and seemed to be very aware of the consequences of defending herself
Edited on Tue Dec-08-09 10:17 AM by slackmaster
At one point she tried to talk tough, saying she'd kill the guy "graveyard dead", but that subsided quickly and she was nearly overwhelmed with sympathy for the attacker before she shot him.

After she shot him she literally asked God for forgiveness. I'm not a religious person, but I know it would be hard for me to live with having done what she did. I also know that if my life depended on it, I could do it.

An important part of self-defense training is learning how to deal with not just the "first fight", which is the one in which you use deadly force to defend yourself against an attacker. Later comes the second fight, which is potentially having to defending your actions in the eyes of police and other first responders. You have to make sure they don't see you as a threat, and you must suppress any temptation to let your high adrenaline state put you in a giddy, high-horse attitude. You must not display glee at having won, even though you may be feeling it temporarily. (It's probably just the adrenaline talking and it will go away.) The third potential fight is in the legal system, where you may face criminal charges and lawsuits.

Even if you were morally and legally justified in the first fight, the second and third can cost you a lot of money, your reputation, even your freedom.

I recommend that every person take some kind of self-defense class. Any martial art; firearm, edged weapon, exotic weapons, or empty hand, the legal and moral issues are all the same.

19. Sadly, there are folks on this board who think the intruder is a vicitm of our "gun culture"

Thank you for posting this 911 call.

Most of the gun owners I know are a lot like her. They want to have a gun and use it for self-defense as a last resort.
