Deputy arrested for false imprisonment, aggravated assault and battery
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 09:44 PM by TPaine7
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy was arrested Monday for assaulting a man at gunpoint who was having sex with her daughter in the deputy’s home.

Dorethea Collier, 48, was charged with false imprisonment, aggravated assault and battery for the Nov. 2 incident. She was arrested after a review by the state attorney’s office, said sheriff’s office spokeswoman Teri Barbera.

When Collier arrived home, Larry Butler, 19, of Pahokee, Fla., hid in the closet while Collier’s daughter, Uzuri Collier, 20, held her bedroom door shut.

But Dorethea Collier barged in and found her daughter partly clothed and a naked Butler in the closet.

The uniformed deputy punched Butler three or four times and then pointed her gun at him, handcuffed him and ordered him to his knees.

I think this is interesting in that I understand the mother's motivation, but she got her role as a LEO and her role as a mother mixed up. I'm impressed with the DA's office, I'm especially the fact that they didn't try to make the situation go away. And the deputy didn't lie her way out of the situation (or her daughter testified against her).

2. Now, now.
She may have been a clean cop up until this incident. Knowing your daughter just got through being "made love to" in your house can be a severe stressor.

Of course she should be charged and convicted, just like anyone else would be (assuming adequate evidence).

Personally, I only despise crocked cops. The good ones are heroes.

I know I wouldn't want the job.

3. a cop is just a gangster employed by the state.
Nothing more. Frankly, mobsters and criminals have left me alone more than the fascist cops have.

7. How very irrational of you.
Having known a fair few police officers in my time, I can tell you right now that you're dead wrong. That's not to say that there aren't bad cops, or that they aren't put to bad use by their superiors at times, but I do not hold the line officers in the same low regard that you do.

4. Good. This woman behaved way over the line.
If you can't keep a level head, then you shouldn't be an officer of the law. Particularly not if you can't respect the life of your adult child.

8. Sounds like the rule of law is being followed.
And these are two consenting adults having sex. Why did the mother react like that?

10. I must have missed this thread
TPaine I am not agreeing that this is understandable. The daughter is 20 years old for chris' sake. If she were 15 or 16 maybe....she is an adult.

11. The motivating *emotions* are understandable,
not the behavior.

(Kind of like I can understand a cop being angry seeing the new guy walking into his old house with his ex. Punching and arresting the new guy is a different matter altogether.)

I do not excuse her reaction, but her emotions--which she is duty bound to control--are understandable. Given her reaction to her adult daughter's behavior, I would guess that her "not in my house" views were well known.

You are, of course correct, that this is quite unlike catching your 14 yo.
