Firefighter Critical After Road Rage Shooting
A Milton firefighter is battling to survive after he was shot in what police are calling an extreme case of road rage. Joseph Fasano, 30, of Quincy is being treated at Boston Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

His third surgery was scheduled for Monday. A Milton fire official tells WBZ's Ron Sanders it's his understanding that Fasano is out of surgery and everything went well. Police say the incident happened around 12:50 a.m. Sunday on Commander Shea Boulevard in North Quincy.

Fasano's girlfriend told police the driver of a gray sports car was jamming on his brakes in front of them. "He'll jam on the brakes, so now you have to jam on the brakes," explained Quincy police Lt. Jeffrey Burrell. "He'd go a little bit further (and) jam on the brakes, and then you got to jam on the brakes."

Burrell continued to explain that the suspect and Fasano both got out of their cars, and that's when police say the suspect shot the firefighter, got back into his car and drove off. Fasano was hit in the chest area.

That's one reason they invented cell phones............to call the cops.

Glad the guy is doing OK. He's lucky he isn't dead.

DO NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR.
Especially at 12:50 am.

You never know when some GUN wielding ass-wipe is going to jump out and blast you.

Point being, if someone acts provocative at you, they are either rage heads, armed or off duty cops.

8. I agree with you, except on one point
You never know when some GUN wielding ass-wipe is going to jump out and blast you.

Why emphasize the "gun" part? Someone with a bad attitude like that would not be beyond using a baseball bat, knife, L-shaped lug wrench (also incorrectly known as tire iron), a MagLite or even his base hands to inflict injury in such a situation. All of those can land you in the E.R. just as readily.

5. I think a cell phone would have been very appropriate in this case.

To get out and "settle it like men" invites the unknown to happen. So long as there is no immediate danger use the cell phone. Oh, btw, even "deactivated" cell phones will dial 911.

I recall one incident where I witnessed something similar going on. This CHL holder got involved. I called 911 and stayed on the phone till a cop was present. Now I don't know if it helped expedite the police response but when I identified myself to the dispatcher I informed her that I was a CHL holder and was carrying at that time. (That is the law in Texas - anytime you I.D. yourself to police you are required to notify if you are a CHL holder and if you are carrying at that time)

6. Another CCW holder,
Bail set at $500K in Quincy road rage case December 16, 2009 04:14 PM
QUINCY – A judge set bail at $500,000 today for the son of a prominent developer who allegedly shot an off-duty Milton firefighter during what police have described as an incident of road rage.
Robert P. O'Connell, 40, is accused of shooting Joseph Fasano, 30, in the abdomen on Saturday night with a .45-caliber handgun after the two men pulled over on Commander Shea Boulevard to exchange words. O'Connell did have a valid permit to carry firearms, Keenan said. That permit has been revoked. http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/12/man_turns_himse.html

9. Small detail: it's Massachusetts
Not only is it Massachusetts, it's Massachusetts close to Boston. We're talking about a "may issue" state, where the local senior law enforcement officer has the discretion to grant permits only to those who demonstrate an actual need and reliable character, and in the eastern parts of the state, is notorious for being stingy with permits. But how much are we willing to bet that "the son of a prominent developer" might have received some preferential treatment with regard to his application, possibly involving certain incentives (e.g. kickbacks, campaign contributions) on his father's part to the local civil authorities?

Be that as it may, there's no "shall issue" law to blame here.

11. Is this another CCW holder that never breaks the law?
I'm surprised the fanatics here aren't calling it "a good shoot!!!"

There's still time. Maybe some detail will emerge and they can say the thug feared for his life?

14. Who here claims that CCW permit holders never break the law?
Oh, that right. Nobody does.

The claim is that on average CCW permit holders are less likely to break the law than the general population. That is not to say none of them ever do; but the percentage of those who do is smaller than the percentage of the general population who do. One anecdote doesn't invalidate that.
