Man Shoots, Kills Woman Robber With Her Own Gun in Gun-Free Chicago

Man shoots woman robber, flees

A robbery victim overpowered one of four attackers, took her gun and fatally shot her while the other three left to get food late Tuesday on Chicago's South Side, a law enforcement source says.

Barbara McComb, 21, was found with multiple gunshot wounds about 11:15 p.m. in an alley at 4708 S. King Drive, police said.

The robbery victim was inside a four-door Ford Escort with four suspects, including the woman who was killed, the law enforcement source said.

McComb was told to "guard" him while the other three left the car to get food. While they were gone, the man overpowered the woman, took her gun and shot her with it and ran from the scene on foot, the source said.

Shooter has been arrested. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I doubt that the newspapers will do follow up stories. I can understand him running away. There were still three bad guys and he has used up some of the ammo in the woman's gun - maybe even all of it. He has to assume that the guys are armed. But he should have quickly called police and surrendered to them.

1.  But they were going to get some food for him!!
He had no call to attack the woman. After all they were only wanting "stuff", and the guns were just for show.

13. I know, right?
My friend is in the hospital with leukemia right now, I would be devastated if one of the times I put a gun to his head and dragged him out of the hospital with three other possibly armed people and took him to the store so we could get him some food he went and shot me. That would be so inconsiderate of him!

2. At least he's still alive...
No telling what his captors would have done had he not escaped. But I bet he'll be jumping through a
few legal hoops for quite a while.

3. This sounds like the kind of story that is going to change
It's just a little farfetched, leaving a woman to guard a male while three men duck out for food. Besides, hadn't they already robbed him? What else did they want with him? Trust me, bad guys don't want victims around any longer than necessary.

11. Possible ransom attempt? Vendetta? Drug running?
We don't know who the victim was or whether there was any prior contact.

15. I wouldn't say that.
Don't overestimate the intelligence and professionalism of petty criminals.

8. Serious question
can you be penalized for using a gun in self-defense in an officially gun free zone if you take it from the person attacking you?

Seems ridiculous to me that you could be punished for that, which leads me to believe that you can.

10. As of this morning (12-26) . .
Reports are saying only a teen accomplice of the woman killed is being charged:

http://www.suntimes.com/news/24-7/1959121,CST-NWS-teencharged26.article

"The attempted robbery went horribly wrong -- so wrong that the target of the crime ended up shooting and killing one of the alleged robbers after getting hold of a gun that had been used to force him into a car, sources said.

Now, a 16-year-old boy is charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with the Tuesday night incident in the Garfield Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side, Chicago Police said Friday.

Although the teen was charged as an adult, police refused to release his name, the time of his bond hearing or give many details of the case.

A law enforcement source earlier said the teen and at least three others abducted a man as he was walking near 47th and Prairie, pulled him into a four-door Ford Escort and attempted to rob him at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

At some point, some members of the group, including the teen, went to a restaurant and left another alleged accomplice, Barbara McComb, 21, of the 4200 block of South Calumet, guarding the man with a gun, sources said.

A struggled ensued, and the target says he seized the gun and shot and killed McComb. A Thursday autopsy determined McComb died of several gunshot wounds. The death was ruled a homicide, authorities said.

No one else has been charged."

As it should be!
