4. my whole point was not discussing the cato institute itself
but what the article was about regardless of the feelings one may have about the cato institute (though i admit my post responding to yours was also pointless lol)

6. The "conventional liberal" outcome suggests that Stevens, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor
may be inclined to side with city governments in their efforts to reduce the presence of guns within their boundaries.

But how futile such efforts are when guns can simply flood in from nearby gun happy jurisdictions.

Indiana feeds Chicago. Virginia feeds D.C. (Who feeds NYC?)

7. Reducing the presence of firearms merely creates armed criminals vs unarmed civialians...
where is the advantage for an honest citizen in that.

As you point out gun restrictions are futile. You might argue that a total ban and confiscation of firearms would alleviate the problem. This is politically impossible in the United States. I would contend that if such a law were magically passed, the results would be a disaster. You might easily have a civil war or a revolution that would break this country apart.

8. Its always someone elses fault, isn't it?
Never the criminal that pulls the trigger.

Never the criminal that takes the gun where guns aren't allowed.

And certainly never a city that enacts a law that it lacks the ability to enforce without pointing blame on its neighbors for that laws failure.

If chicago dc and new york and places like them wish to be that different than thier neighbors where guns are concerned, the onus is on THEM and them ALONE to make that work - Not on thier neighbors.

I bet its easier though, and far less expensive, to point fingers and blame neighboring states.

5. An excellent read on a complicated case...
Two other links I found:

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2009/10/05/gun_control/

http://reason.com/archives/2009/12/02/killing-slaughterhouse

The majority of states now have a "shall issue" concealed firearms permit. I would predict that in the next 10 years, the states who are currently resisting firearm ownership and concealed carry will change their laws. Eventually, all citizens who can pass the NICS background check and state concealed carry requirements will be allowed to own and carry firearms.

Somewhere down the line, a national concealed carry permit might be available to citizens and correct the mishmash of laws we currently have.

With my Florida permit I can carry a firearm concealed in 33 states. Individuals from those states with licenses can carry concealed in Florida.

FLORIDA'S RECIPROCITY STATES
Alabama (1,3,5)
Alaska (1)
Arizona (6)
Arkansas (1)
Colorado (1,4)
Delaware
Georgia (1)
Idaho (3,6)
Indiana (1,3,6)
Kansas (1)

Kentucky
Louisiana (1)
Michigan (1,4)
Mississippi (1)
Missouri
Montana (3)
Nebraska (1)
New Hampshire (1,3,4,6)
New Mexico (1)
North Carolina (1)

North Dakota (3,6)
Ohio (1)
Oklahoma (1)
Pennsylvania (1,6)
South Carolina (1,4,6)
South Dakota (1,3)
Tennessee (1,6)
Texas (1,3,6)
Utah (1,6)
Vermont (2)

Virginia (1,6)
West Virginia (1)
Wyoming (1,3)

***snip***

QUESTION 2. There are a number of states that issue concealed carry licenses but do not have a reciprocity agreement with Florida. Why?

The State of Florida will honor the concealed weapon/firearm permits issued by another state PROVIDED THAT the other state will agree to honor the licenses issued by Florida. The states listed above are the only ones that have agreed to honor Florida permits.

There are a couple of important reasons why other states will not honor Florida concealed weapon licenses. Some states, like Connecticut, do not have statutory authority to establish reciprocal agreements with other states. Other states, like Minnesota, will not enter into a reciprocity agreement with another state unless the other state has concealed weapon licensing standards substantially similar to their own.
