Athens police: Would-be robber shot himself in foot

Police in Athens say a man preparing to rob a convenience store accidentally shot himself.

Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman says 19-year-old Michael Anthony Randall Jr. of Athens shot himself above the ankle with a sawed-off shotgun when he tried to pull it out from his coveralls as he approached the store Sunday night.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports Holeman says the blast caused extensive damage, and doctors do not think they will be able to save Randall's foot.

Holeman says investigators plan to take out a warrant charging Randall with attempt to commit armed robbery.

2. A really bad economy always brings out the amateurs
One convenience store clerk got a lucky break. Those people are in near-war zones in too many locations.

22. That has happened to a few criminals who didn't use holsters...

* Hitman Chanh Thong Vo, 24, was killed in what was most likely a contract
murder in Toronto in December. Vo was known in the community for favoring
the front waistband of his jeans to hold his .45-calibre handgun, and
because of an earlier accident in holstering his gun, he was known as
No Wang Vo. (Globe and Mail, 12-21-95)

6. He had a criminal record.
http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/122909/new_540528462.shtml

A man who was with Randall at the time took off running when the gun discharged, and investigators were tracking him down to charge him with attempted armed robbery as well, Holeman said.

Randall was arrested in 2007, when he was 17, on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and selling cocaine within 1,000 feet of school grounds. As part of a bargain with prosecutors, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of possession of cocaine, and a judge sentenced him to three years' probation and ordered him to obtain a GED.

Randall violated probation several times this year when he allegedly committed the new offenses of financial transaction card fraud, theft and other crimes, according to Clarke County Superior Court records.

23. Ow, that'll leave a mark.
A close range shot from a .729 caliber weapon is pretty darn traumatic.

I play Halo sometimes with a police officer from a nearby town who wears a prosthetic lower leg and foot. As I recall, he lost the foot when he was accidentally shot in the lower leg by a fellow officer with a 12-gauge shotgun, during a raid, and they couldn't save it.
