Police Seek Wig-Wearing Gunman In Deadly Robbery
Detectives Release Surveillance Video In Boston Store Shooting

UPDATED: 5:18 pm EST December 29, 2009

BOSTON -- Boston police are asking for the public's help in their search for a wig-wearing gunman who shot and killed a Jamaica Plain convenience store clerk over the weekend, waving a pistol at the clerk as he hid his own face with a scarf.

Police said Surendra Dangol, 39, was shot at about 3 p.m. on Saturday in the Tedeschi Food Shops store at the corner of Elliott and Centre Streets...

...Security camera still photos previously released by Boston Police show a man in a heavy black coat and woolen cap entering the store with a blue backpack.

He draped the backpack over the counter and told the clerk to put money in it, which Dangol did as the robber is seen at the counter reaching into his pocket and pulling out a gun. The clerk stuffed the backpack with cash from the register as the pistol was pointed at him at close range...

I don't understand how this could be. We've been assured by some of the brightest minds here at DU that robbers, home invaders and burglars only want money and/or swag. <sarcasm off>

1. I wonder where the assailant got the gun. Did he buy it legally?
Did he borrow it from someone who owned it legally? Did he steal it from someone who owned it legally? Where do all of these guns come from? There seems to be hundreds of thousands of them and I don't know of any situation where they start out as unregistered weapons.

2. What difference does it make? Mr. Dangol is dead.
I daresay anyone who is willing to murder someone for no good reason probably wouldn't scruple to obey a law that
usually is good for a five to ten year sentence (if that) in MA.

6. Almost all guns start out unregistered at sale.
The US does not have general gun resistration. A few states do have it, most don't. The form 4473 at the gun store is not registration.

The point of the story is that robbers often kill you anyway. Some regular posters here try to claim that if you just give the robber what he want then you are guaranteed that he will go away peacefully. But sometimes they kill you anyway. Because of that, many of us who are pro-self-defense believe that if a robber is threatening you with death or great bodily harm, then you are immediately in danger and are justified in defending yourself.

10. Most guns sold are unregistered
because most states have no registration requirement. That is as it should be.

3. Dead clerks can't finger you or testify against you.
Of course there's the rush the BG got from offing the clerk and assuring his street cred all in one
fell swoop. In light of the reality that is life and death on the sreet, some of the "brightest
minds" here appear to be rather dim bulbs indeed.

4. We have also been assured if the risk is low for a violent crime we should not worry about it

at least in the case of terrorism. What no one seems to get is even when the percentage is relatively low - the person on the wrong side of the percentages is just as dead

9. True, true.
99% chance of not being shot is small comfort to the family of the 1% or the guy looking down the barrel of a gun wondering if he's number 100.

5. Would the clerk have used a weapon if he had one?
Nobody knows.

7. He would have had a choice, and a chance.

A choice is better than no choice.

It demonstrates that what certain posters claim is simply not true. They claim that if we comply with the goblin, he will go away peacefully. Sometimes he doesn't.
