Why gun lovers love guns - NRA says "The guys with the guns make the rules"
thats why they want a gun.

Counting votes to decide on rules? Nah. Who needs that. Let's let the guns make the rules. MY guns.

Here, don't believe me, watch to Wayne LaPierre, head of the NRA say it himself, televised live on CSPAN.

1. Your are taking his quote out of context, to make it sound evil.
America's freedom was won with guns, not petitions to King George. Freedom is protected by guns. If the only guys with guns are the bad guys, we are screwed. I encourage everyone to watch the full video, it is only about 52 seconds.

Have you ever heard of the "Deacons for Defense and Justice"? You may want to look them up. They adopted a purely defensive stance, and were effective in stopping the KKK from making shooting runs through black neighborhoods. http://www.africanaonline.com/orga_deacons_for_defense.htm

The brutal fact of reality is that Mao was right in one thing. Political power does grow from the barrel of a gun. Voters have power because guns protect that power.

2. Funny, mine are for enforcing lawful rules.
Like the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

But you're right, without guns, the founding fathers wouldn't have had any authority to make those rules, being under the thumb of the crown and all.

3. I "love " my guns like some people "love" their cookware.
They're enjoyable to use. They are made with a high standard of craftsmanship. They give solid, consistent performance.

There are village idiots in any group of people, but the vast majority of "gun lovers" are no different than amateur chefs. They have a hobby and they appreciate good tools.

11. Stainless Belgique with a side of 9mm.
Homemade poppers (jalapenos, cream cheese, batter, and panko) with a side of G19.
These are so good you'd be crazy not to arm yourself to fight off anyone who sees these delights.

Too many comments use up too much space is my guess.

18. Brady posted that out of context video and requested the comments be disabled.
You have to make that request of youtube. That is standard practice of Brady. They post something out of context or with poorly acquired data and then do not allow the truth to be told. In this case if they had comments enabled someone would post a video response of the WHOLE video in context showing Brady's deception.

8. Stereotype much?
Ignoring the fact that whoever did the video probably pulled a Fox News on LaPierre, how exactly does what one guy says or thinks speak for 80+ million gun owners, only 4-5 million of whom belong to the NRA, and only one of whom is Wayne LaPierre? That's no different from that of the freepers who think all Muslims are fundamentalist Wahabbists.

13. You automatically assume that Wayne LaPierre speaks for all of us?
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 09:44 AM by derby378
Dang, son. You need to spend a little more time on this forum and educated yourself.

It's like saying that Michael Moore is an official spokesperson for gun owners everywhere because he maintains a life membership in the NRA (which, AFAIK, he has never relinquished).

14. The Reality in Seattle, and everywhere else...
The Reality in Seattle, and everywhere else, is that the people with the guns DO make the rules. And people without guns live by the rules those with the guns set for them.

There's an old saying, "Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who do not".

20. A simple paraphrasal of Mao Zedong and Max Weber, surely?
Didn't Mao say something along the lines that political power comes ultimately from the barrel of a gun? And Weber described the state as the entity within a given geographical territory that possesses a monopoly on the (legitimate) use of violence (though "force" might be a better term in English; German does not really have separate words for the two; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly_on_violence).

Putting these two together, LaPierre's statement that "the guys with guns make the rules" can be interpreted more innocently to mean that when the only persons to possess weapons are the members of a ruling elite (say, the Workers' Party of Korea) and their agents, anyone who is not a member of that elite does not possess political power, and any input the citizenry may have on the running of the state occurs only at the sufferance of the ruling elite, who may withdraw it at any time.

By contrast, an armed citizenry possesses at least some measure of political power by which it can force the government to "deriv<e its> just powers from the consent of the governed" (to paraphrase the Declaration of Independence), thus ensuring the government's legitimacy, and making the citizenry part of the state (in Weberian terms), rather than mere subjects.
