How many carry a knife?

I know many here are CCW holders, and many are not. But I was just wondering how many carry a knife. If so what do you carry. I just got a new knife for Christmas, a HK Nitrous Blitz Knife from Benchmade, that has become my new EDC.

Knife fighting is a martial art. It's not simple and it's close and bloody. If you happen to pick the wrong target with some skills in dealing with a knife attack, you could easily end up on the wrong end of your blade.

A knife can be a last ditch self defense tool. Still, it's wise to know something about knife fighting.

Most knifes are poor tools for stabbing, far better for slashing.

112. I've got a Gerber Fast Draw, got it while waiting for a CRKT I ordered

I really don't trust simple liner locks, got three stitches and some mild nerve damage to my pinky after one closed on me in high school. Picked up the Fast Draw because it looked like a reasonably priced, decent quality knife that did not rely on a liner lock, just like the CRKT M-16-13Z I had on order. I really like it, I have ended up carrying it much more often than my CRKT, the assisted opening is pretty good as well.

But I have owned good blades from Gerber, such as this Applegate-Fairbairn Covert folder.




Supposedly, one of the top companies is Chris Reeves Knifes which produces the Sebenza folder. These are not cheap knifes. I own a Chris Reeves fixed blade which I am impressed with, but have not felt the need for a Sebenza. Yet.

I've carried a pocket knife for the last 20 years. Inside, outside, at work, at home. Always with me. I always find a use for a cutting blade. Cutting twine, opening those God*&^%$#((*** plastic packages everything comes in these days, cutting flowers for my wife when on a walk in the forest, opening a 40# bag of dog food, cutting out coupons in the sunday paper, light prying, etc. I don't have to go hunting scissors or a razor blade or kitchen knife as it is always clipped to my pocket.

I really like the locking mechanism on the benchmades. I have several Gerbers and SOGs that have the lock release on the back of the knife. They are good blades. But have had a couple of occasions where I have used a of force to cut or pry something and the force of my grip released the locking mechanism on the back of the handle. You don't have that problem with the liner or axis locks.

This is my first auto assist opening knife. Really like the feature. Not an issue of speed as I can flick open most of my knives in about the same time. More of a handy feature when working in close quarters or cramped spaces, or needing to open it when holding awkward stuff...just move the blade a bit and ... pop ... it is open and locked.

Pre-9/11 I used to carry a 3.5" locking folder with me on the airlines. It was legal then. Just popped it in the plastic bin with my keys and change and they'd just hand it back to me. Once or twice I had a TSA agent open it and measure the blade and then hand it back.

One is a Spydeco Endura fully serrated folding knife with a 3 3/4" blade. I find that this knife is very useful for tasks such as cutting rope, wire or cardboard.



I also carry a fixed blade knife such as the Bark River Classic Lite Hunter which has a 4 inch plain edged blade:

These two fixed blade knives are excellent for food prep as they require less care and careful cleaning than a folding blade knife for such tasks.

I should point out that Bark River knives require a different type of sharpening than most modern factory knives. They have a convex edge. You sharpen using a strop loaded with compound. Once a persons acquires the technique, they often prefer convex blades over the typical factory edge found on most knifes.


Before I retired, I carried a Benchmade 710 at work. It proved a very useful tool and while it was evil black and had a 4" blade, I never had any serious problems with management. In fact, many other people started carrying pocket knives.


I've carried knives since I was a child in the 50's. It's amazing how useful they are as an everyday tool.

Most of the CCW permit holders that I have known carry quality knives. It's almost a give away that if a guy has a Benchmade or Spyderco folder clipped to his pocket, he has a CCW license.

if you can still find that model, or if all they offer now is one with the "assist" knob on the back and the auto-LAWKS. Those are great features but sometimes you want a KISS kind of knife.

I think they're an awesome company, though, and they offer replacement parts for life (I believe). A year or so ago I got new frame screws and silicone washers for free, for a small (pen knife size) Mt. Shasta model that had gotten gunked up and worn out. I had literally taken it around the world with me (thanks to a quick-thinking Air New Zealand gate agent in LA, I was able to bring it to NZ, OZ, and SE Asia) and I would have hated to retire it :)

I have a concealed weapons permit. Therefore, I can carry a concealed knife (even a switchblade) as well as a concealed dirk, dagger, billy club or stun gun.

Florida seems to trust its citizens far more than other states. Many states have concealed firearms licenses but restrict those with a license from carrying many common pocket knives. Go figure.

Except for a few municipalities - Berkeley, city and county of Los Angeles, and one or two others - Concealed carry of a folding knife of any size is legal. Berkeley's is particularly ridiculous: No knife of any kind with a blade over two inches long.

It can't be a "switchblade knife" as defined by PC 653k, and you can't carry a fixed-blade knife over a certain length concealed. However, you can carry a fixed-blade knife (or machete, or sword, or axe, etc.) openly just about anywhere.

The places (Berkeley, L.A., etc.) that have local knife restrictions have exceptions in the law for carrying a knife as a tool for your occupation. That allows police to enforce the laws selectively - A white systems administrator may need a big knife for opening boxes and cutting wires, but of course a black or Hispanic person couldn't possibly need a knife on the job because they don't work. :sarcasm:

If you do in fact live in Alameda County, I believe you are not subject to any draconian knife restrictions.

A Swiss Army knife for fine work, and the biggest, cheapest, junkiest lockblade I can find for poking and scraping. And since I never go in a restaurant alone without a book, it works well to hold it open while I eat too.

84. I carry 2 for hunting (Gerber 2/3" drop point & an old Shrade Walden fixed blade...

I skin & gut deer with the Gerber; split the rib cage and hammer apart the pelvic arch bone with the ancient Shrade. The Gerber has been through a dozen deer and smaller game animals and has not loosened up or been damaged; impressive construction for -$30. Last month, I misplaced the Gerber and used my back-up Case (2/3" drop point locking, l/4" thick case) to skin and bone with. I was surprised at how well the Case held up in dulling work. I've carried one of these in my pocket for the last several decades. Blade is less than 1.5 inches. Also has a nail file, scissors, screw driver tip, tweezers and toothpick. I use it almost every single day, and always miss it if I forget it. Opening packages, triming finger nails, opening letters, getting stuck food out of my teeth etc. Only my car and house keys get more use.

Lately I've lost several due to the current rage in paranoia. Gotta confiscate my knife, lest I go on a murderous rampage with my 1.5 inches of cold steel destruction! :eyes:

Have one of these in my pocket & on my keychain - Minichamp II - I like the Phillips screwdriver on it. I also have hooked to it a Leatherman Squirt with scissors & a Photon micro light. Put the Minichamp & Squirt into a little Leatherman nylon pouch I bought.



I probably use either one of the knives or tools everyday and/or the light.

I carry a Leatherman Wave for general utility purposes, and also because it's the first Christmas present my wife ever got me, so it has a lot of sentimental value.

I also carry a Blade-Tech MLEK Lite with a combo edge (http://blade-tech.com/M.L.E.K-LITE-Military-Law-Enforcement-Knife-CE-pr-1050.html), for those occasions I might need a blade I can open one-handed in a hurry, e.g. to cut through a seatbelt, or put a painful slash on the hand or forearm of someone who's trying to overpower me (hopefully buying me the time I need to get to my gun). Which isn't to say I don't use it for opening packages...

I carry an old Camillus assited folder. Use it ten or twenty times a day. Lots of things need cutting and with one touch of the blade, the knife is ready.

Wouldn't recomend it for self defense, or any sort of offensive work, but for trimming loose strings, opening letters or packages, cutting a bit of fabric, or even in a pinch lifting the lid from a paint can.

For years I carried an official BSOA pocket knife and since then various single bladed folders from Old Timers to Kershaws. Currently I've got a Kershaw Ken Onion Chive in my pocket. Truthfully I'm surprised how many people men or women do not have a small pen knife of some sort. Heck my Mom keeps a no-named three bladed stainless knife in her purse.

420HC is a stainless steel with good corrosion resistance that takes an edge easily and holds it long enough for most uses.

420 and 420J represent the low end of stainless steels. They are very stain resistant, and are tough due to being very soft. However, they are also very weak, and not very wear resistant. Generally speaking, expect these steels to lose their edge quickly through abrasion and impaction. They are used in less-expensive knives due to their ease of machining. Ref - 420 And 420J2 Steel Composition Comparison.

440A and its relative peers, 425M, 420HC,12C27, and 6a are the next group. They can be hardened more than the previous group, for better strength, and they are more wear resistant, though wear resistance is just getting to the point of acceptability. 440A and 12C27 are the leaders of this group, with solid heat treat both perform okay. 12C27 is said to be particularly pure and can perform very well when heat treated properly. 6A trails those two steels, though with its vanadium content, can take a razor edge. 425M and 420HC trail the rest.

Gin-1, ATS-55, 8A and 440C comprise the next group. These steels will usually be stronger than the previous group, and more wear-resistant. Generally speaking, they retain excellent stain resistance properties, though ATS-55 sticks out here as not particularly stain resistant. 8A is also worth a mention, with some vanadium content, it can take an extremely sharp edge very easily, but is also the weakest and least wear-resistant of this group.

Many years ago in high school, bullies used to harass me. Then one day I got fed up and carried a large knife to school with and scared them off. Not one ever bothered me again. To this day, I still laugh at them.
