New year.Time for me to get re-focused on real 2nd amendment rights.
The back and forth here is a waste of time. We have already seen the mountain of evidence that shows CCW holders are safer than police. And that legal hand guns are used for legal self defense way more often than anything bad.
The people who choose to believe guns are bad will not change their mind in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. No amount of education will make them see the truth for what it is. It's a waste of time and effort.

So, it is time to get back to letter writing to elected officials. I was trying to do 1 letter to a different person each week, but I kind of lost focus somewhere. I guess I just got distracted. But it's a new year. A good time to get back on track. I have a list here of the people I have already written to,senators and congressmen, and who has responded.
I don't actually know if the letter writing makes any difference. I know that personal letters are more effective than anything else, but does it really carry any weight? I don't know.
I do know that doing something is better than doing nothing. So I will just do what I can, and be good with that.
Granted our elected officials are likely to ignore what the people want. But they are going to listen to whoever makes the most noise, that is just the way things are. It won't matter to an elected official if we claim there are a million pro-second amendment people, if they are only getting letters from anti-2nd amendment people. I can't really blame them for paying attention to what the voters are saying. So, we have to talk to them. Let them know what is going on. I really believe our biggest shot to our own foot has been our complacency.
I would ask you other pro-2nd amendment guys to give me a hand, and write a few letters.

I may even, reluctantly, join the NRA again. I hate their damn junk mail.

Happy new year. And be safe.

2. Don't worry, we'll still be here doing good works...
IMO, the purpose of the Guns Forum is to provide a "demonstration project" for DU (a fairly significant group of progressive Democrats) which will lead to more and more sentiment for junking the gun prohibitionist platform in the Democratic Party, and for convincing President Obama to re-think his gun stances and change his outlook. I think we have made great progress in changing folks' minds, here. Hope to hear from you in the months ahead!

I also write letters (such an arcane practice, now).

3. Yup, been writing letters for a couple of years..
.. I bend my congresscritters' & local folks' ears about all kinds of subjects.. the latest was the public option (*sigh*), toll road privatization in Texas, repealing DADT. Any time 2nd am topics come up, I start writing.

I've noticed that I usually get a more personal response when writing long hand, and forget email / form letters.

7. I'm considering writing "letters to the editor" to newspapers ...
in states that prohibit or limit gun ownership.

It will be interesting to see if they get published.

16. I doubt that Obama would pay attention to a letter from me.
Both my Senators and my Represenative are strongly pro-gun. The local Democratic party is pro-gun. Watching Ann Richards get slapped by Bush over guns sent a strong message to Texas Democrats.

My effort is concentrated on this forum, to hopefully persuade some of the lurkers of our view.

That does not mean I disagree with your efforts. They are vital too, but for me they would be wasted.
