Illinois & Chicago - firearms and ammo sales could be a shot in the arm(?)
Saw a thread in GD where Illinois is in dire straits concerning its budget, Chicago has its share of doom and gloom too.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4223832

State is $5 billion in the hole, expected to reach $13 billion in the coming months,
Chicago needs to find $520 million.

Would anyone here care to venture guestimates on how much money Illinois/Chicago have lost due to their gun laws? Michigan reported

$17 million in taxes collected on just firearms and ammo alone,

this $17,000,000 does not include everything else such as targets, reloading components, etc etc etc etc etc etc.........

Have they missed the boat?

Quinn: "Guns are okay...but only private property....with permission!"

Daley: "We're broke, but Chicago is safe!"

;)

Would it please you if DU declared a moratorium and lock down the sub-forums and threads unrelated to Haiti, unemployment, etc until things look rosier?

Cracked is one of my favorite sites! And I think in this case, number 6 is where DB really falls in, but I can see the others as well. :)

3. I imagine the sales/revenue/tax loss statewide isn't that huge.
Where Illinois could potentially stand to lose a great deal is if another federal AWB is passed.

The state is home to something like 5-6 "evil black rifle" manufacturers.

10. 17mil is not exactly peanuts.
Again, Michigan raked that much in on just guns/ammo alone.

Maybe I didn't phrase my OP correctly?

it is a tidy sum of money (especially in these times).

However, as far as lost tax revenues from firearms/ammo sales, it mostly applies to to the policies in place in Chicago.

The pro-RKBA community in the rest of Illinois probably accounts for a decent amount of tax revenue even with Chicago
out of the picture.

15. You may be right.
Population of Illinois is approx 13mil, Cook County only 5mil.

Still can't help thinking that the FOID card has probably held back scores of law-abiding people in Illinois from purchasing simply because they don't care for it (the FOID). Without a FOID, valid for 5 years, mere possession of a firearm OR ammo in the state is illegal.
If there were no such crap as a FOID, I think more would purchase not only guns/ammo, but the droves of related items as well.

Some stuff I did not know
(and have trouble comprehending free citizens tolerating).

18. How much money do they lose
by not having a CCW permit process? I live in IL and my non-resident FL concealed carry license which is valid in 33 states cost me $117 for 5 years. Huge revenue for a state I don't even live in.

Another question to ask - how much is lost in taxes when people get fed up with the infringements on their rights and leave? I'm in the process of relocating to Dallas, TX and a major factor in my decision is the restrictions on my methods of self defense in this shithole of Chicago. And the 10.25% sales tax. And the retarded high parking fees, taxes, parking permits, and all the other bullshit. Bye bye Chicago, you just lost another taxpayer!

22. The FOID card has cost IL a little bit from me
I have gone to IL several times to my cousin's farm to hunt and/or plink. We run out of ammo every time we're plinking, so I drive 20 miles to Paducah, KY, pick up a few extra bricks of .22 and whatever else we're shooting, then drive 20 miles back.

Figure my case, then extrapolate that to visitors and resident. within reasonable distance of roughly 600 miles of state line that touches gun-friendly(ier) states and IL is losing a tidy sum. I know several folks in IL who never buy guns or ammo in IL. There's probably some straw purchasing going on concerning guns and state lines, but I'm just guessing on that. It's all lost revenue.

I refuse to even buy gas in the state unless I get stupid and forget to fill up before leaving KY.

21. The McDonald case is estimated at another $4 - 5 million ...
... in legal fees MINIMUM for Chicago and Oak Park, not counting the time Daley has committed by his salaried city attorneys. But what the hell. It's all taxpayer money so why should Daley care?

One of the senior attorneys involved in the case shoots with us and we have our annual "Winter Wars" MilSurp shooting event this weekend, so I'll have an update from him over a bowl of chili Saturday. In fact we invited Gura to come out for the day (and round of applause). But for some strange reason he doesn't want to come out, lay in the snow and shoot a loaner Garand or Mauser for a day in sub zero temps. Go figure?

Every other suburb and village that had a similar handgun ban, Evanston, Morton Grove, Wilmette etc. all dropped their ban rather than fight what their corporate counsel told them would be a long term, expensive and losing battle on the case against incorporation.

The village of Oak Park thought they would get a free ride on Chicago's coat tails on the issue so they refused to repeal theirs on "principle". About three weeks ago they were stunned to find out that Daley actually expects them to pay part (a big part) of the legal fees associated with the case. Now they are stuck with it.

In the end, Gura plans on recovering all his costs from the city and Oak Park if/when they lose just like he did in DC and the NRA did in San Francisco. IIRC DC was something like $3.6 million and SFO was a big check to the NRA for $360,000 or so. That check probably made the city of SFO the NRA's biggest contributor last year. I hope they gave the Board of Supervisors or Newsom at least one Life membership in return.
