Raising gun worshippers - Teenagers shoot for 3 hours at drivers on freeway
http://www.idahostatesman.com/IdahoNews/story/1055403.html

I can hear Pa now....

"Go on out and git yerself some fresh air, son, and go exercise your god damn constitutional rights! Why don't you boys go down to that hiways yonder and do some target practice, now git, youngins!"

No attempted murder charges.

But our guns laws are sooooooooo restrictive.

Someone is challenging your obsession with the Second Amendment?

You should let this one go. It is not a good story to argue for gun rights.

Oh, and saying somebody is "obsessed" with something simply because they support it is chicken shit, pure and simple. I wouldn't accuse somebody that is Pro Life (as I am) of being "obsessed" with womens rights. It's an idiotic thing to say.

8. I was about 20 miles away from that working at a blood drive.
We saw the sheriffs go by with lights and sirens. Donors told us what was going on a little later. Our trip home took us in the opposite direction. It is in a heavily forested logging area.
A woman from Deary had some inside info. One of the cars had it's rear window blown out and the slug was stopped by the drivers headrest. The two kids are in some kind of special education program at their school and one was a football player.
It is interesting that they aren't being charged with a more serious crime. I can see that being different in another area, especially if it were minority kids involved.

13. How
do you murder a truck?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder
Murder, as defined in common law countries, is the unlawful killing of another human being with intent (or malice aforethought), and generally this state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter).

This petty flamebait is beneath you, or would be if you weren't already in your mother's basement.

17. It's typical, is it?
Given the 80 million plus gun owners, this sort of shit must be happening 10 times a day at LEAST, right??

Or not. The sensationalism of a story such as this is actually proof that this behavior ISN'T typical of gun owners (and notice I say owners and not "nuts").

30.  Not all gun owners are upset with the term "gun nut"...
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 09:05 PM by spin
Field and Stream magazine has a regular column called "The Gun Nut"...

http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/20516/Deer+Hunting

And here's an interesting excerpt from a excellent site on firearms (written primarily for women).

How I Became a Rootin' Tootin' Gun Nut
By Bi

As Denise said in the opening post of the blog, we moved from Texas to New England. Actually, I’m a proud Texas native. As such, I have always believed in the right to bear arms. But, though I learned to shoot in the Boy Scouts and was really never afraid of firearms, I never owned one or felt like owning one for the 30 odd years I lived in The Lone Star State. I suspect that would still be the situation if I had stayed in Texas. But, moving to New England changed my outlook, radicalized me, and turned me into a certified Gun Nut.

Conversely, Denise was already a gun nut and owned several guns. When she received a job offer in Massachusetts, I warned her that the gun control there was harsh and it would be quite a culture shock. I never suspected how much of an understatement that was. The job was too good to pass up, so we packed our gear and moved up to the People’s Republic. As soon as we were settled, Denise began to research in earnest the gun laws of Massachusetts and what she learned horrified her. We learned that Massachusetts law requires a State License to own firearms at all and that each one that you own has to be registered with the state. The license is issued at the discretion of the local police chief and he can arbitrarily deny you a permit. You can appeal a denial, but this means lawyers, judges, and time wasted.

As I watched Denise go through this Byzantine process, I became chagrined and finally outraged by the way that state treated law-abiding gun owners. Denise finished her mandatory firearms training class, put together her application package (very thick, including 3 offsize passport style photos), and finally submitted all of this to the police. The police took her package, fingerprinted her and said they would let her know. Well, after three or so weeks, when Denise’s license appeared in the mail, annoyingly too large to fit in most wallets, she was almost there. Now all she had to do was register all of the firearms she already owned with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and she would finally be a legal firearms owner.

***snip***

So, in my case, the silly gun control laws of Massachusetts backfired. They turned someone who was ambivalent about firearms into a full bore gunnie. I doubt I’m the only one.

24. You can't legislate stupidity..
.. nice attempt at framing gun owners as stupid, though.

Let's see.. 80m gun owners, ~300k offenses committed with firearms (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/offenses/violent_crime/index.html)

Assuming one and only one crime per gun owner (and that's a BIG assumption), that gives us a percentage of 0.375%. (Hint, that's significantly less than the national crime rate of 454 per 100,000.)

37. "Freeway"?
Try using Google Maps some time; Idaho State Highway 8 around Deary is a two-lane county road. The nearest freeway is I-90, 50 miles to the north. SH 8 also doesn't connect any sizable localities, so it's highly unlikely there was a lot of traffic coming through on that road. So when you say "shoot for 3 hours at drivers on freeway," that gives a more than slightly misleading impression of the volume of traffic they fired at.

And did it occur to you that--being 14 year-olds--they might have absconded with the firearm without the knowledge (let alone permission) of the parent who owned it? Bad performance on the parent's part as far as both kid-proofing your guns and gun-proofing your kids is concerned, I acknowledge, but rather a far cry from encouraging the kids to shoot a motor vehicles.

And why should the two kids be charged with attempted murder? Idaho apparently has a very specific offense on the books--unlawful discharge of a firearm at a vehicle--which very specifically covers what these two did. If you have any evidence that they deliberately intended to kill someone, I'd love to hear it (as, I imagine, would the Latah Co. sheriff's office).

44. Here's some helpful advice.
Everything you write on this board is public. Anybody can read it, and a lot of people do. So while you may think this is your own personal playground where you come to insult people you don't like, in reality you are selling guns.

"So in a gun worshipers world.. it is completely normal to shoot at cars filled with people"

"*THAT* is how crazy gun worshipers are."

"In a gun worshipers world, if there isn't a dead civilian..."

"They should charged with one count of attempted murder charges for every car they shot at."

The above is the bulk of your post.

Talking heads and political operatives on the right have hung around the neck of liberals in this country an ugly caricature of a group of people who, for the most part, do not exist. It is an alleged group of people who are arrogant, elitist, conceited, pampered and completely detached from the reality of everyday life not only in the United States but the entire world since the Paleolithic era. Your opinions, whether they are genuine or not (you're probably just some false flag jerk), could have been expressed by that caricature. It is a "gun worshipers" worst nightmare and the confirmation of the worst suspicions harbored by conservatives about liberals.

If you really want to help solve the problem of gun violence in America, shut up. Or educate yourself so that you may offer an informed opinion. It wouldn't hurt to take other people's feelings into consideration since that's how you're supposed to act in a civilized society.

Otherwise, blunder on. And congratulations, you just sold another AR-15.

45. Where did I say ANY of that?:
Oh, that's right: I didn't. You just decided to... embellish what I said, just like you decided to embellish the contents of the newspaper article. And by "embellish," I mean "make shit up."

You're not giving yourself any added credibility with that "gun worshipper" crap either. Use of pejoratively intended terms like that indicates that you're resorting to demonizing me because you know you can't mount a persuasive argument.

The Idaho criminal code includes specific provisions concerning aiming and discharging firearms at other people, and causing injury as a result. The Idaho criminal code also specifies that if someone dies as a result of these activities, the shooter shall be charged with manslaughter.
Now, that may not go far enough to your liking, but that is the current state of law in Idaho, and the rule of law demands that criminal suspects be charged with the actual offense that are suspected of committing; anything else would constitute arbitrary governance, and this country isn't supposed to work that way. The fact that I don't think it's appropriate to charge these two with attempted murder when there's a statute that more precisely covers their offense (and make no mistake, I think what they did was criminal, albeit most likely criminally stupid) doesn't mean I think it's "completely normal" to shoot at an occupied vehicle. Call me a bleeding-heart liberal, but I strongly question the social value of responding to every criminal offense by locking the offender up for as long as you can manage.

Let me know when you're ready to give up the pejoratives and the straw men and have a polite but frank exchange of views. If you're capable of that at all.
