Criminal Has Really Bad Day, Ends Day Getting Killed.
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/01/27/20100127homeownershootsintruder.html

The references news article is one of the most jumbled up articles I have read. They report the story with the sequence badly mixed-up. Here is what appears to have happened.

Thief was attempting to rob a vending machine. He was spotted and made an escape in his car. He cracked his car axle making his escape. An elementary school was put on lockdown while police searched the area.

Criminal invaded a home and demanded car keys, ID, and money. Resident gave him a 12 gauge blast to the belly.

Home invader was taken to local hospital where he died of injuries.

Another promising criminal career, cut short early by an uncooperative homeowner.

1. Damn vending machines. They embolden crime, or was it the car that emboldened the crime?
Perhaps he was just hungry? The homeowner should have just given him what he wanted.......

5. you folks like the term "home invasion" because it validates your fears...
...so much better than "burglary," right?

Wait, is there a way to hide this entire forum? Hmmm....

6. It's a specific crime.
Home invasion is the crime of entering a private and occupied dwelling, with the intent of committing a crime, often while threatening the resident of the dwelling.

7. So, it's O.K. to just let them in and not resist them...
'cause all they want is a Coke and a smile, right?

10. Because that is what it is.
Intrusion by violent force of an occupied home with the resident awake.

Burglary has an element of stealth to it. A burglar tries to sneak in and out, without the resident knowing about it. A home invader kicks the door in and is ready to confront the resident.

Think of it as the difference between a pickpocket (burglar) or a mugger (home invader).

Notice that in this story, the criminal didn't sneak into the home. He forced his way in to force the resident to hand over car keys, ID, and money.

It is amusing to notice that you folks always like to downplay the crime that is being committed.

...of victim-hood. I swear I think some of the constant posters in this forum are among the most fearful people I've ever heard. Why do you need such constant validation that you're ready to protect yourself from hordes of "home invaders,", "bad guys," and "criminals?" There's a real circle jerk element to this forum, you know?

And for pete's sake, is there a newsletter or something DEVOTED to those sorts of stories? Where do posters in this forum FIND them all?

13. We are all about NOT being victims.
We will happily leave being a victim to your side.

I will admit that the probability of having to defend myself against violent crime is low. Yet, it has already happened in my family. A few years ago my wife used her gun to prevent being mugged and likely killed. I have known several people who have had to use their guns in self-defense. I each case, no shots were fired. Violent crime does happen, even to good people, and it is wise to be ready for it.

11. Yes yes...
And a car jacking is actually just hitchhiking, bank robbery is an unexpected with drawl, a stabbing is just an intrusive increase in heavy metals, arson is actually an unscheduled demolition and the semantics that you love to cling to are actually intelligent.
