NM: Bill to allow guns in restaurants clears committee
Bill to allow guns in restaurants clears committee

http://newmexicoindependent.com/45386/bill-to-allow-guns-in-restaurants-clears-committee

On Wednesday, a House committee voted to advance Senate Bill 40, sponsored by Sen. George Munoz, D-Gallup, which would allow those with a concealed carry license to bring their guns into restaurants or bars that serve liquor. It’s a measure he tried to pass last session–but back then the bill applied only to bars.

The Senate Corporations and Transportation committee passed the bill by 8-1 Monday,

It is good to see a Democrat pushing this bill.

I do go to restaurants. Last night was my wife's birthday. We went to a nice restaurant, and I was armed, as usual.

26. You obviously don't live in a city
where insane legal gun owners will routinely shoot someone because they're driving too slowly or look at them a little funny, or even dare to call them on their poor driving skills.

BTW - It is very rare that a legal gun owner will do the things you describe. When caught and arrested, they almost always have prior police records.

Well, I get off on black powder and find no relief with any other aroma therapy I have tried . Normally thick skinned , I find the constant attacks on my sexuality to be insulting and at times threatening . Only a person filled with the blackest of hates could seek to deprive me of the basic human right of getting a nut .

Anti-gun editorial cartoonists are paid royalties by the NRA for reprint in their -- ahem -- house "organs." So, I guess "grabbing" can be okay when it comes your way!

52. Well, you've always had the "right" to carry on airplanes...
Though not a "right," you must carry them in order to get them through the check-in process; same as it ever was.

As for schools, the only ones carrying are the occasional psychos. But they don't need a law or right. Right?

33. I'm of mixed mind about this
I live in Washington state. Here, it's illegal to carry in any establishment or section of an establishment that has been declared to be off-limits to persons under 21 by the state Liquor Control Board. That means bars, "lounges" (bars attached to restaurants), and bar areas of restaurants). It is legal to carry in establishments which incidentally serve alcoholic beverages but whose primary purpose is to serve food. Personally, I think that's a reasonable way of organizing things: ban guns from establishments that are primarily for drinking, but permit it in dining establishments that have a wine list.

As a result, I'm fine with allowing guns in restaurants, but I'm leery about permitting them in bars. I don't go to bars much any more, but when I do, I'm certain to drink a fair bit, and that means I don't bring a gun. It's been a long time (over ten years) since I got belligerently drunk, but in the event that it does happen again, I don't want to have a weapon on me.

Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 08:10 AM by benEzra
Carry is allowed in establishments that derive less than 51% of their income from alcohol sales, and in restaurants with bars, you can't sit at the bar.

Of course, the gun-control lobby would still be just as hysterical about such a bill, so perhaps the bill's authors figure there is no point in making concessions in an attempt to assuage their ostensible "fears".

37. Here in Kentucky the law is the same.
You can carry in restaurant that happens to serve alcohol, but not in a saloon or the bar area of a restaurant. I have never been much for drinking, so abstaining from alcohol while armed has never been a problem for me. There are sufficient laws, I think, covering ill-advised combinations of drunks and dangerous machinery.

DUI convictions here are cause to deny or revoke a carry permit. That strikes me as prudent. If an individual is not personally responsible enough to not drink and drive, they are probably not responsible enough to keep from drinking while armed either. On the other hand, I am opposed to blanket prohibitions which only penalize those who are responsible and are universally ignored by the irresponsible.
