Police: 8 teens shot at Indiana skate rink

Eight teenagers were wounded in a shooting Friday night at a skating rink in Gary, Indiana, police said Saturday.

Gary Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said that a fight broke out during or after the concert at the World of Skates roller rink on Friday, prompting the rink's manager to close up for the night.

"The manager asked everybody to leave, and when they went outside somebody just decided they would open fire and eight young people were shot," she said.

She said those wounded range in age from age 14 to 18. They were taken to local hospitals, although King said none has life-threatening injuries.

She was not certain if any remained hospitalized Saturday. No arrests have been made, she said.

A phone call to World of Skates was not immediately returned.

1. I wonder if it was a real gun, or a pellet gun......
Or someone is an excellent shot.

Minor injuries all around - I assume that any gunshot wound not life threatening is a minor.

Seems purposely vague, and that it doesn't matter to the OP.

5. BB/pellet gun sounds likely. I guess it's vague so that fact isn't apparent.

It wouldn't be as terrifying if it was a bb gun.

But, anything is possible.

6. Survival rates for getting shot are around 85%
It is statistically very plausible that all 8 survived. Unlike in Hollywood, most people that get shot don't die. To reliably kill people with a gun you have to be careful and/or lucky. Handguns aren't nearly as lethal as some assume.

10. Did you find anyone advocating "everyone" be armed?
No? I think if you go to the GOP-founded, GOP-led Brady Center, you might find someone who says that; I mean, it's the latest meme.

Comments

March 6, 2010
POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT

Eight teenage boys suffered gunshot wounds late Friday as they exited a popular Gary skating rink after attending a concert.

Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said Saturday "all chaos broke loose" when a fight broke out during the event and security advised attendees to leave Skate World, 4415 W. 5th Ave., in the Commons shopping center.

King said no arrests have been made.

One of the victims told police he was shot in the stomach by a male black holding a rifle. He said the man was wearing a red hat and had dreadlocks.

The wounded were transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake in Gary, St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago and St. Margaret Mercy Health Care Center in Hammond.

Police accused Waka Flocka’s hype man of inciting the crowd by pitting the “East side” against the “West side,” which may have started the fight Police Cmdr. Michael Mallett told the Post-Tribune.

I think the owner of the facility may have some explaining to do. Why in the world would he/she send 200+ "kids" out to the parking lot after a fight broke out?
