Authorities say a man who fatally shot another motorist in California before turning the gun on himself appears to have targeted a stranger in a road rage incident.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office says 36-year-old Jenson Kohutek had some conflict with 49-year-old Jack Larson while driving in the Somerset area of Placerville, which is 40 miles east of Sacramento. After their two vehicles eventually crashed, Kohutek allegedly shot Larson, then killed himself.

Sheriff's officials say there appears to be no prior link between the two men.

Authorities say Larson later died at a hospital. A 72-year-old woman who was a passenger in Larson's SUV was not injured.

Now here's the thing: the weapon used in an incident of running amok was typically a bladed weapon, such as a kris or parang. In other words, it's perfectly possible to commit mass murder with a blade, and ghu only knows how many such incidents took place.

By way of more recent examples, we can point to the Akihabara massacre (Tokyo, Japan, 08-Jun-2008; 7 dead, 10 wounded), the Zhabei police station attack (Zhabei, China, 01-Jul-2008; 6 dead, 4 wounded, all policemen), the Nonhyeong-Dong massacre (Seoul, South Korea, 20-Oct-2008; 6 dead, 7 wounded), and the Dendermonde nursery attack (Dendermonde, Belgium, 23-Jan-2009; 3 dead, 12 wounded).

Yang Xinhai was convicted in 2004 of 67 murders (and 23 rapes); he committed the murders from 1999 to 2003, by breaking into houses (mainly farmhouses) at night and murdering the occupants, often entire families at a time. The weapons he used were axes, hammers and shovels.

The worst spree killing in modern history didn't occur in the U.S., but rather in South Korea. Woo Bum-Kon murdered 57 people and wounded another 35, on April 26th and 27th, 1982. Admittedly, Woo did use firearms (two selective-fire M2 carbines, to be precise), as well as hand grenades, but the reason he had access to them was because he was a police officer.

The most prolific American murderer is Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer." He was convicted of 48 murders, but confessed to 71, and probably committed more than 90. He strangled every one of his victims, though of course, he did so one at a time.

The worst American spree killer is still Andrew Kehoe, who killed 44 people (plus himself) and wounded another 58 on 18-May-1927 in Bath Township, Michigan in the rather euphemistically named "Bath School Disaster" (as if were some act of nature rather than a mass murder). The weapons Kehoe used were explosives; specifically large amounts of pyrotol and dynamite.

Beijing, China (CNN) -- A man stabbed eight children to death and wounded five others at an elementary school in eastern China on Tuesday, local media said.

The attack took place shortly after 7 a.m. at the Experimental School in Nanping City, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

The city, in Fujian province, is 1,486 kilometers (923 miles) from the nation's capital, Beijing.

The school, with more than 2,000 students, is considered one of the best in the city of 3 million people.

The suspect in the attack is a 41-year-old man who once worked as a doctor at a community clinic. Some news reports said he recently resigned from the position; other said he had been fired

I'm one of those "stupid fucking assholes with guns", but here's the thing, I've been carrying concealed for years and I've never had to pull my gun and shoot yet and I hope I never have to but if I do because some asshole of a criminal leaves me no choice, I won't hesitate.
