Two arrested in Va. road-rage shooting

Two Virginia men were arrested after one, driving with his 2-year-old daughter in the car, fired 13 shots at a truck that hit his vehicle, authorities said.

A Ford truck and Jaguar containing the child had collided during afternoon rush hour as the two jockeyed for position while trying to merge along southbound I-95 Tuesday, The Washington Post reported.

"The drivers of the two vehicles began engaging with one another in an aggressive manner," a police statement said. The dump truck struck the Jaguar two times, and the vehicles "ended up on the left shoulder and pinned against the Jersey wall."

Police allege at that time the driver of the Jaguar, Gabriel Poventud, 25, armed with a handgun, fired 13 shots into the truck driven by James Bringham, 44, the Post said. Bringham then drove his truck into traffic with Poventud following for about 5 miles until they were stopped by Virginia State Police Trooper B.W. Coleman.

Bringham was charged with reckless driving. Poventud faces charges of attempted homicide, child endangerment, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless use of a firearm and shooting a missile into an occupied vehicle.

There were no reports of any other motorists or vehicles being hit by bullets, the Post said.

The homicide rate is three or four times that of the United States. I know, it's such a small, obscure country that it's very easy to overlook, but it is most assuredly industrialized.

There are other former component republics of the USSR that also have higher homicide (and suicide) rates than the United States, such as Belarus, Ukraine, and the "Baltic republics" of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The latter three are even member states of the European Union these days.

Or does your definition of "industrialized nation" have an ad hoc exclusion for countries with higher homicide rates than the United States?

Don't need to bet, because it's moot. Indisputable government stats prove that CCW holders are much less likely to commit gun violence that non-CCW holders. You can toss around all of the isolated incidents you want -- it doesn't change the big picture.
