Bloomberg to Obama: Get Going on Taking Guns Away
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 08:31 PM by oneshooter
A report from a national coalition of mayors urges President Obama to adopt dozens of gun registration and confiscation measures, including the creation of a federal interstate firearms trafficking unit.
After months of waiting in vain for gun control supporters in Congress to take aggressive action against semi-automatic firearms, gun shows and NRA-supported restrictions on the abuse of instant background check records and firearm trace information, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging President Obama to make 40 changes to federal gun law interpretation and enforcement on his own-without congressional approval.

Titled "A Blueprint for Federal Action" and released only in response to requests under the Freedom of Information Act, the 51-page Bloomberg battle plan takes another cue from the military in calling for its mission to be carried out jointly by seven federal departments and agencies: the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security, the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The first six agencies are wholly under President Obama's command, while the CPSC is an independent agency headed by commissioners nominated by the president.

2. gun show regulation would be a step in the right direction
and better tracking of firearms. other than that there`s not much big city mayors can do about guns. working on the causes of gun violence would be a better solution but that takes time and money. neither one of those solutions are even discussed.

7. Guns show need no extra regulations.
What is needed is access to the NICS checks for private sellers, which they are currently prohibited from using.

6. Uh....
A: "tea bagger" is not a bigoted term.
B: tea baggers with guns are a scary lot (note their most recent display of violence)
C: I'm not a dude.
D: If you are a tea party person, you are in the wrong forum. Freeperville is down the hall and to the right.

14. Those most opposed to common citizens owning guns -
- are the uber-rich. And Mayor Bloomberg is a multi-billionaire.

Dem until 2001
Rep until 2007
Indi right now

I'm suspecting he will be in the tea party next. Or perhaps just come right out and declare he is in the communist party.

11. Funny how
It's funny how the politicians who scream the loudest for gun control are the same ones with armed bodyguards following them around 24/7 or have their own carry permit and own a gun.

But us peasants aren't allowed guns.

13. Bloomberg and Mayor Daily of Chicago ...
are both similar in the fact that they want to deny the average citizen the right to own firearms.

Often the elite ruling class likes to keep the peasants disarmed.

15. Having seen the kind of rage the mere passage of an -
- insurance reform bill can evoke from the right I don't believe the President or any Congressional representative would dare to propose gun restrictions for awhile. To do so would surely pop the cork.

17. Not to mention it would also piss off the gun owners in the center and on the left.
Clinton found out the hard way in the '90s that gun owners are not all on the Right.

18. If I recall correctly
25% of Dems are gun owners. Perhaps someone who is certain about this can chime in.

19. That's about right. I think the figure for indies is 27 to 33 percent.
And if you run the numbers (25% of Dems and 30% of indies) against the 50% of repubs who own guns, you find that the total number of Dem and indie gun owners is about the same as the number of repub gun owners.

On the other side of that coin, the Brady Campaign was founded by and is run by Republicans.
