Concealed-carry law passes Iowa Senate
DES MOINES — Iowa would become a “shall issue” state and sheriffs would lose much of their discretion in denying concealed weapons permits under legislation approved by the Senate Saturday.

Senate File 2379, adopted 44-4, would create uniform standards in all 99 counties for issuing permits to carry a concealed weapon in public. Under current law, sheriffs can issue or deny permits. There standards vary with some issuing permits to nearly everyone who applies and some denying nearly all applications. Nearly 35,000 Iowans have concealed carry permits, according to lawmakers.

12. Good for you! But if you're in Illinois - you're already outnumbered/outvoted
I-GOLD turned out 7,000 people this year in Springpatch two weeks ago, up from 5,000 last March for concealed carry.

How many do you think you'll be able to turn out from the gun control non-movement?

Brady's last Washington DC rally had maybe 800 on the Capitol steps and they cancelled their "big" Mothers Day rally.

10. Your choice, but let me get this straight
You go shopping in Iowa, a "may issue" state, dependent upon whether or not the sheriff got some last night. That means, the county you went shopping in may have had a lot of people concealed carrying if the sheriff "May issued" to all that applied. You could have been in the midst of a whole bunch of guns but didn't know it and that didn't bother you.

Now that they're going to "shall issue", it makes a huge difference?

Again, it's your right to go or not go someplace and I don't hold that against you. I'm just curious why "may issue" didn't bother you and "shall issue" does.

16. It wasn't a problem in Ohio and Minnesota when they went shall-issue.
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 11:46 AM by friendly_iconoclast
And, like Iowa, they were already may-issue, so some locales were effectively shall-issue while others were, ahem,
Illinois-like. They had no rise in violent crime when they changed over. What makes you think it will be different in Iowa?

17. Well, the folks in Council Bluffs and Clinton can be trusted but ...
... I don't know about those wild, trouble makers in Cedar Falls and Mason City!

Blood will run in the streets of Ottumwa and Dubuque, just wait!

This will make a big dent in the campaign coffers of some Sheriffs I bet.

(My family is all from Iowa)

<sarcasm>

Chicago, particularly South Chicago, is extremely safe. Guns are illegal there.

23. Great news, shadowrider -- thanks for posting it.
And Democrats made it happen! Is it possible that we're finally wising up and taking a potent weapon out of the hands of the GOP?

I've written many letters to Democrats (and the DNC) on this issue, and will continue to write -- as I imagine members of this discussion forum have.

:woohoo:
