Texas DPS Announces Changes to Concealed Handgun Licensees Renewal Process
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 06:40 AM by shadowrider
Texas --(AmmoLand.com)- This is the official bulletin from the Texas Department of Public Safety announcing as of May 1st concealed handgun licensees renewing their CHL will no longer be required to include pictures or finger prints.

www.tsra.com/images/stories/general/chlbulletin04072010.pdf

This is a major step toward further streamlining the licensing process and more changes are in the works.

You’ll also read in the bulletin that from April 28-May 3 the FBI will be processing the 484,000 census employees. This could cause a slight slowdown in the current CHL processing time (20-27 days) but the department believes they can overcome even that.

DPS Director Steven McCraw has added new people with new ideas, looking at public safety, customer service, and the best use of technology. Bucket brigade processing is a thing of the past.

2. I assume you have to provide prints & a photo when you first
apply, so it makes sense that you wouldn't have to provide them again for a renewal. This is the 1st regulation change made in TX that I agree with.

3. I assume that's the case
They're just trying to make things easier for those who already have the permit.

5. Yup, but even for new licenses, they're going with digital fingerprints.
According to a bulletin I saw last year, unclear or smudged fingerprints were the number one delay.

7. I've gotta do that as well.
It's still a pain in the neck here in Oklahoma, and a whopping 170 bucks for a 10-year renewal. Heck of a "right" to carry, innit?

8. $17/year doesn't sound too bad...
Although I beleive no fee should be required.

That's right in the middle of the usual price range of $15-20/year I've seen, and most places require renewal every 4-5 years.

I'm a legal resident of Vermont, which means no fees or paperwork when I'm at "home", but it also means I need several different non-res permits for reciprocity while traveling. That adds up quickly. Aaargh.

6. A step in the right direction.
Not as big as Arizona's step, but a step nonetheless. :)

9. I can't see no good reason to include fingerprints with a renewal ...
