7 wounded in New Orleans shooting.
When you insist on guns in your society, children will have guns.

2. So it was a gang shooting
what does that have to do with honest citizens owning guns?
Quit with the guns are bad and should be banned, will never happen

6. Sadly
Some of the most dangerous people in our society are the potentially well-intentioned but misguided partisans on both sides that are willing to sacrifice the Constitutional Rights of all of us in the name of reform or "progress".

7. Well our country gives firearms to 17 year old individuals ...
when they join the army with their parents permission. Trains them and sends them off to war.

One would think that age to enlist in the US military would be a simple category. One is either old enough, or too old, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. By federal law (10 U.S.C., 505), the minimum age for enlistment in the United States Military is 17 (with parental consent) and 18 (without parental consent). The maximum age is 42. However, DOD policy allows the individual services to specify the maximum age of enlistment based upon their own unique requirements. The individual services have set the following maximum ages for non-prior service enlistment:

But I don't disagree that we need to combat youth gangs and the crime they commit. Taking firearms away from honest citizens will do little to accomplish this. Legalizing some drugs would do far more, as it would take the profit motive out of smuggling and dealing drugs.

11. That's your opinion ...
and you often express it here on DU.

My opinion differs. More guns does not equal more crime, unbelievable as it sounds.

While there are far more firearms in our country then there were in 1973, the violent crime rate has shown a dramatic drop since 1994.

That time frame (from 1993 to 2000) was when shall issue concealed carry laws swept through our nation.

Compared to 1973 when revolvers were popular and most rifles were bolt action, today the firepower has increased tremendously with semi-auto handguns being and "assault weapon" style semi-auto rifles being the best sellers.

Current estimates are that there are about 80 million gun owners in America with a combining total of 258 million guns.

Now I am not going to go so far as to say that more guns = less crime, as there are far too many factors to consider. However, I believe that your idea of making guns and ammo scarce would be impossible to accomplish but would lead to fewer firearms in the hands of honest citizens. Consequently, criminals would have less fear of armed citizens and crime would increase.

This interesting and humorous video shows how criminals feel about gun control.

13. And I'll ask you this once again
do you propose to outlaw lathes and drill presses? And how will you stop the smuggling of guns across our borders? The former Soviet Union had some of the most secure borders in the world but were still unable to stop smugglers. You will never ever stop criminals all you will do is disarm law abiding citizens and put them at the tender mercies of thugs. Nice going there Shares
