A man living there called 911 and secured his family members in a locked bedroom, then loaded the shotgun. The intruder used a wrought iron patio chair to break a glass sliding door and come into the house, and the male resident shot him. “From what I’m told, he showed some restraint,” Botetourt County Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom said about the shooter. “But it got to the point where he didn’t have much of a choice.””

Farrow’s two sons, who were with their father at the time, also helped out. “They recovered the money blowing down the street. So, that was there job,” Farrow said. “I’m showing them how to be true Detroiters, true citizens despite if they’re in Detroit or outside Detroit. It’s if you see something wrong and somebody’s doing something wrong, don’t look the other way. You know, help out.” In exchange for a job well done, Police Chief Warren Evans gave Farrow and his sons a certificate of appreciate, thanking them for doing the right thing and helping keep Detroiters safe. McKnight said the three men assailed him with insults and continued to threaten him. McKnight then drew a .38 caliber pistol and told the trio to back down. Police say Michael W. Ryan III, a Cornelius man with no fixed address, then said he didn’t believe the gun was loaded, and began to assault McKnight. Police say that Ryan kicked and choked McKnight, who struggled to free himself. In the midst of the struggle, Ryan bit McKnight’s finger. “He bit his finger pretty severely,” said Capt. Aaron Ashbaugh, spokesman for the Forest Grove Police Department. McKnight told police that Ryan had him in a sleeper hold and he felt that he was losing consciousness when he fired a shot from his revolver near Ryan’s head. Only then did the young man back off, Police said.”

Sometimes guns are used for self defense. Sometimes they are used for good.

Of course, one dipshit drops his gun in a toilet and you have an instant CNN ALERT!!! To CNN's credit, I was actually able to find one of these stories on their website. That was the only story I could find where a civilian was doing good with a firearm posted on their website in the past month. Also, in a lot of these stories, there were no fatalities. Good and bad guys lived. You don't have to kill someone to use a firearm for good. Sometimes just seeing it, or hearing the boom they make is enough to make a bad guy turn tail and stop their threat.

On a lighter note… This story made the national news: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2010/04/19/dnt.finger.gun.suspension.cnn?iref=allsearch
Un-f*cking believable. Little snowflake has a gun, maybe we should water-board her?

1. If it bleeds, it leads...........ergo
if a citizen is able to defend him/herself without firing a shot -- which is what happens in over 90% of defensive gun uses -- you'll never know about it.

10. No not insecure... But hey, thanks for the insult. P'iciate it...
Part of my job is to query things. All one has to do is enter specific querys into a program and let the program do the work. I just copy and paste the results. Takes about 10 minutes.

You wanna know how many news stories that involved puppies that were published in the last month on news sites?

I'll tell you anyway...

2:54pm Start query...
2:55pm End Query...

Results:
8386 individual news pages edited in the past 30 days that contain the word "puppies". I did not work the query down to the unique stories, that is a different process that takes about 8 minutes for results of that size.

Does typing words into a program make me insecure? Hardly.

12. you're the one who has a negative association with insecurity
it's clear that feeling obliged to me to carry a gun around everywhere 24/7/365 is a sign of fundamental insecurity with life.

AGAIN, I'm not trying to insult you, I'm observing and expressing an opinion on that observation.

You want to be a Google researcher:

How many non-gun owners get through every day of their lives safely without a gun? PRACTICALLY EVERYONE. What are some ratios here that would indicate that gun owners are the sole deterrent of violent crime? Why don't you guys ever post stories about all the botched "save the day" gun toting heroes who shot their own dicks off. Technically, I guess you can only do that once, but. . . .

Seriously. I'm not criticizing you - just the odd focus that many (collective "you" perhaps?) have on why guns save the day, and by implication why ONLY guns could have saved the day.

14. I would have to disagree. Strongly.
From my perspective and from what I have been through in my life, and the level of prejudice and violence that does indeed exist in today's world it is not an insecurity to prepare. My wife has taken rape prevention and self-defense courses. Does this make her insecure?

In self defense training fully half of what my wife and I learned was preventive, and she and I practice that half in hopes of never having to use the other half.

All activities (driving a car, filling the bathtub, walking through the parking lot at night) entail some risk. We all have different attitudes toward risk. At one end of the scale is refusing to engage in an activity by exaggerating the risk involved. At the other end is engaging in very risky activities while refusing to take any precautions. Neither of these attitudes are useful for living an empowered life. What is useful is to accurately assess the risks involved, take whatever precautions make sense, and live as fully as possible. This is not insecurity.

As to your last statements...
"How many non-gun owners get through every day of their lives safely without a gun? PRACTICALLY EVERYONE." I would answer that question with a question. How many non-gun owners when confronted with someone larger, stronger, faster, skilled, etc... who wanted to end their life, had an option other than to lay down and take it?

"What are some ratios here that would indicate that gun owners are the sole deterrent of violent crime?" I have never, nor will I ever state that gun-owners are the SOLE deterrent to violent crime. I will however state that a gun owner IS A deterrent to violent crime.

"Why don't you guys ever post stories about all the botched "save the day" gun toting heroes who shot their own dicks off. Technically, I guess you can only do that once, but. . . ." Lol... I have never been inclined to do such a search. However I just ran a query for someone shooting their balls off by accident and nothing "popped" up (no pun intended) on the news sites.

"Seriously. I'm not criticizing you - just the odd focus that many (collective "you" perhaps?) have on why guns save the day, and by implication why ONLY guns could have saved the day." Again, I would never state that ONLY guns save the day. Nor would I state that guns in and of themselves would save the day. Awareness, preparedness and the proper tools and response to a threat save the day.

17. well let me continue to generalize
in that case.

shooting balls off = hyperbole. Anyway, you could theoretically do that twice depending on several factors, including whether one has more than one nut to begin with. Correction, I said shooting dick off. Dick <> Balls. Anyway, hyperbole = humor = lost on many in the gungeon. :P

You didn't answer my research request with a concrete number, or by extension WHY most everyone who really don't want or need guns should be to be assaulted by people who claim it is their right to carry guns everywhere in civil society that it is possible to do so.

A little understanding both ways would go a long way. Awareness, preparedness, and proper tools and response are fine with me for house, home and personal property.

I am considerably less charitable when it comes to understanding why some dweeb is so paranoid about getting rolled at the gym or at daycare pickup or in church. THAT just comes across as paranoid, when that research number I wanted was a number that would describe probability in concrete terms, lined up against the probability of other events such as the McDonalds blistering coffee in the cooch event or even the accidental auto-deballing or de-dicking via accidental or inappropriate personal firearm discharge. I actually do believe more people do indeed shoot their dick off than get rolled at the gym. (Hyperbole alert).

:P

Thanks for the level headed interaction - I'm being more lighthearted than pantywad activist.

19. To your question...
"You didn't answer my research request with a concrete number, or by extension WHY most everyone who really don't want or need guns should be to be assaulted by people who claim it is their right to carry guns everywhere in civil society that it is possible to do so."

I think that there are several things here to address.
It is not just a case of claiming it is their right to carry guns everywhere. It is by the definition of the law their right. It is a factual statement to say that it is my right to carry a gun. The laws of the state I live in protect such right.

Want's or needs cannot really play a part in it. I don't want or need a Klan member to yell at me that "all niggers should should be wiped off the face of the earth". But, it is his right to do so. And, I will also stand to protect that right. I don't have to agree with what he is saying, but I strongly believe that what he is saying should be protected.

Personally I feel that a little education would address the fears and concerns of non-gun owners and go a long way towards a mutual understanding between those who do and those who don't choose to carry a firearm. Hence the main point of my OP.

From an older post of mine:
The issue I fear is ignorance about firearms due to media-bias. I am not implying that the media hates guns at all. They are biased towards tales of death, killing, murder, infidelity, etc… It is good for ratings. How many minutes a day of news stories do you hear about a professional golfer who is faithful to their spouse and good to their kids? How many minutes a day do you see, read and hear about the opposite?

In 2001, the three major television networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- ran 190,000 words' worth of gun-crime stories on their morning and evening national news broadcasts. But they ran not a single story mentioning a private citizen using a gun to stop a crime.

The print media was almost as biased: The New York Times ran 50,745 words on contemporaneous gun crimes, but only one short, 163-word story on a retired police officer who used his gun to stop a robbery. For USA Today, the tally was 5,660 words on gun crimes versus zero on defensive uses.
However in the first 10 days of December there were 18 defensive gun uses. You have to drill all the way into local newspapers or police blotters to find them. Basically they are buried so deep; the average person will not read about them, and you will almost never see them on TV.

-- Little Rock, Ark: After the assailant attacked him and his son-in-law with a poker, a 64-year-old minister shot a man dead on church grounds. The attacker had engaged in a string of assaults in an apparent drug-induced frenzy.
-- Corpus Christi, Texas: A woman shot to death her ex-husband, who had broken into her house. The woman had a restraining order against the ex-husband.
-- Tampa Bay, Fla.: A 71-year-old man, Melvin Spaulding, shot 20-year-old James Moore in the arm as Moore and two friends were beating up his neighbor, 63-year-old George Lowe. Spaulding had a concealed weapons permit.
--Bellevue, Wash.: A man shot a pit bull that lunged to within a foot of him and his family. Police said the man's family had been repeatedly menaced in the past by the dog.
-- Jonesboro, Ga.: A father out walking with his 11-year-old daughter was attacked by an armed robber. The police say the father shot the attacker in self-defense and will not face charges.
-- Houston, Texas: Andrea McNabb shot two of the three men who tried to rob her plumbing business on the afternoon of Dec. 1.
-- Philadelphia, Pa: A pharmacy manager fatally shot one robber and wounded another after the robbers threatened to kill workers at the store. The wounded robber escaped.

Just look at newsworthiness. Just simple news judgment. If an editor faces two stories, one with a dead body and one where a woman brandished a firearm and her attacker ran away, no shots fired, almost every editor would pick the story with the dead body. It’s good for ratings.

The issue I think is that the media just simply fails to report on people who use guns to save themselves or others. The general public is exposed to only one side of the story, so from what they see on TV and on the front pages of their newspapers, they can easily form an opinion that people who carry guns are to be feared and that guns are a threat to safety. This ignorance I’m afraid is what causes the fear some people in the public have of firearms.

As GreenStormCloud stated, exposure I think would help with the general public’s fear of firearms. I’ll give you an example. I was in Jackson WY for vacation recently, we travel there a lot. My wife and I went there to just relax at a spa, do some hiking and spend lots of time in the hot tub. Jackson can be a popular vacation spot for people from Los Angeles, Sand Diego, etc… Places where people have very little exposure to firearms.

Well, one night we were on our way to dinner and as usual, I was armed. I carry concealed. We were walking up one of the main streets, when a man with a shotgun in his hand turned the corner right in front of us. Two things happened. I noticed the gun, did nothing and my wife and I continued walking right past him. However a couple walking behind us, panicked and immediately turned and ran out into the street to a police officer who was directing traffic at the intersection. The entire time sort of screeching about the guy with the gun. The police officer looked over at the man with the shotgun in his hands, looked back at the couple and said “He’s not pointing it at anyone” and then gave them a very soft berating about running out into the street. That was the last we heard as we continued on our way to dinner.

My wife and I are quite comfortable around firearms, because we understand them, what their uses are and why people have them. The shotgun was an over/under, the action was open and from my vantage point I could not see any shells. To someone who knows nothing about firearms would not even know what I just said in the last statement, and I can see them being put back at just seeing that shotgun. I saw nothing to fear, as I knew the gun was not loaded, I saw that the man was carrying it properly (barrel down), and from his outfit I could tell he was either going or coming back from hunting. Not an uncommon sight in Jackson during any of their hunting seasons.

Anyway, back to my point. What I would like to see (however, I fear I will never) is more media coverage of defensive uses of firearms. But since it would not make for good ratings, I doubt that would ever happen. There were 6 defensive uses of firearms in the first five days of this month that have been reported so far. But you won’t see them unless you dig them out yourself.

16. Allow me to refer you to a couple other posters,
SharesUnited and Onehandle

Same thing, but in the other direction. Not to call them out, but IN this forum, you will find people discussing these things, and that should not be surprising.

7. Because this isn't national news.
At least I don't think so. They're local interest stories, at most.

8. So, the logic is?
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 01:24 PM by Glassunion
Bad guy shoots someone = National News
Someone shoots bad guy = Local interest story

I do get it. It is not good for ratings at all. There is no fear in the story to scare the shit out of the viewer. The problem with that, I think, is one of the reasons the general public has a fear of guns, is because of what they see on the news. The vast majority of the time the "gun" appears in the news, it is when a criminal is using the firearm. The issue that I have is let's say a woman is raped, then shot by her attacker. If she was a white, well to do person, chances are pretty good that you will see it in the national news. But if that same woman is raped, however she shoots her attacker, odds are it would not be national news. There are many, many levels of bias in the news.

How many times have you seen on the national news a story about a missing or kidnapped average black woman? How about an average white woman? The same mechanisms are at work. Missing black woman = local news, missing white woman = national news. It's just the simple fact that missing white women equals higher ratings. EDIT: Added following link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8233195

In all honesty I doubt the national media will consistently shed light on the good uses of firearms. It's just not in the ratings. So instead the media will continue to perpetuate fear for ratings. But they do that with everything not just guns. Did you ever notice while watching any of the major national news networks that every, little, thing, no matter what it is, is an ALERT! Fox is of course the best at it, but CNN, MSNBC, etc... Are all in a close second.

18. I don't expect the national news to carry every story when someone gets robbed or shot.
Bad guy stories don't always make the national news. Most of these stories are of little interest beyond the local or regional coverage area.

11. I respectfully request that you spell the name of my state correctly
California actually has a good Castle Doctrine law. It does not extend the presumption of reasonable use of deadly force to outside of one's home or place of business, and from what I read the guy in Ripon did not fire his weapon in a lawful manner. He'll probably get a $50 fine and a misdemeanor conviction at worst.

25. Finishing out the month... Some more stories.
West Virginia: Man Dared Homeowner To Shoot Him
http://www.wvmetronews.com/index.cfm?func=displayfullstory&storyid=36760
"A “justified shooting” is how State Police described an incident in Lincoln County Tuesday evening.
Forty-four year old Thomas Perry suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach from a .22 caliber rifle as he attempted to break into a home in the community of Atenville.
*snip*
“Perry had pretty much dared him to shoot him and said he was coming in anyway,” Goldie explained. “In that residence specifically was four small children of Mr. Lambert. He said he felt threatened for his safety and his children’s safety, so he fired the shot.”"

Missouri: Fred Murphy lauded by neighbors for shooting would-be burglar
http://www.ksdk.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=200664
"Murphy went out into the parking lot and confronted the suspect. The owner said the burglar got out of the truck and pointed a gun at him. Murphy was also armed, opened fire, and a gunfight ensued. The suspect was struck in the leg.
Police are calling the injury to the would-be thief minor, identified as 17-year-old Shaquille Kirkendoll. Investigators said Kirkendoll remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect’s gun was recovered from the scene."

New Mexico: Las Cruces Resident Fires Handgun, Scares Burglars Away
http://www.kfoxtv.com/news/23235162/detail.html
"Two 18-year-old Las Cruces men were arrested after police said they broke into an apartment Wednesday evening and were confronted by the resident, who was armed with a handgun.
Police said Ryan Galaz, Shannon Robert Vasquez and a third man kicked in the front door of a man’s apartment at 999 Telshor Blvd., but were confronted with a .357-caliber handgun.
The homeowner told police he fired three shots after he saw what appeared to be a knife."

Utah: Man shoots dog defending his own dog
http://www.abc4.com/content/news/top%20stories/story/Man-shoots-dog-defending-his-own-dog/f0TqMrpGGEq3Oqpas0tZTQ.cspx
"“You can protect your animals with the use of a firearm,” said Lt. John Barker of the Unified Police department. “That’s mainly from years and years ago, for farmers, like for their sheep or something like that, like if a pack of dogs attacks them, then they could use deadly force.”
The man did have a concealed weapons permit."

Colorado: Pistol-packing neighbors nab Willits intruder #1
http://www.postindependent.com/article/20100429/VALLEYNEWS/100429843/1083&ParentProfile=1074
"After allegedly stealing items at the second house, Herrera proceeded to a third house and attempted to get inside, O’Connor said. The homeowner heard the commotion and got his 9 mm pistol to investigate. The man, while his wife called authorities, said he saw the intruder run next door. The man saw the intruder flee when officers arrived, and he went in pursuit, O’Connor said. The armed homeowner snuck up on the intruder, who was crouched behind a tree. The man pointed the gun at the intruder’s head and warned him to stay put, O’Connor said.
Another man, described as a rugby player who is about 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, came to the aid of his neighbor and sat on the intruder until police arrived a short time later, O’Connor said."

Next story is a continuation of the first... One incident... One bad guy... 2 different armed citizens... Guess he picked the wrong neighborhood.

Colorado: Pistol-packing neighbors nab Willits intruder #2
http://www.postindependent.com/article/20100429/VALLEYNEWS/100429843/1083&ParentProfile=1074
Homeowner Avi Manges said she became suspicious that there might be someone outside her house around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when one of her dogs got agitated. She got up to investigate and realized she wasn’t hearing her daughter, who lives in an upstairs apartment. She retrieved her .38-caliber pistol and returned to the area where she heard the sounds.
“I hollered, ‘Who’s there? I’ve got a gun,’” Manges said.
After her warning, the intruder raised his face to peer in the glass pane of an outside door, Manges said. He fled after spotting her and the pistol.

Hall’s father, Richard Hall, had retrieved his .22 rifle earlier because he was suspicious of what the man truly wanted. When Richard saw the suspect pull a gun, he fired the rifle at the suspect. It is unknown if the suspect was hit."
I'm bothered by this story. I understand that his son was shot, but you have to be very carefull of your target and what is beyond it.
