(Georgia) Bill allowing guns in airports passes state Legislature
http://www.macon.com/2010/04/28/1109607/bill-allowing-guns-in-airports.html

ATLANTA — Gun reforms that would let people carry weapons into Georgia airports won final passage Tuesday night at the Georgia General Assembly.

Senate Bill 291, one of two major gun bills before the assembly this year, cleared the House 120-37. It already had passed the Senate and heads to Gov. Sonny Perdue for his signature.

The bill allows licensed carriers to take their guns into airports, but only up to federally controlled security checkpoints. That would include ticketing areas, as well as airport parking lots and drop-off spots.

Sounds like they changed it so that it's like it is for TX. No 'blood on the runways' here.

32. Funny is your denial that regular Democrats would support keeping and bearing arms

Its almost like you're in denial or stuck in the 1970-1980s understanding of what constitutes good gun laws.

25. No.

People are able to obtain concealed carry permits by virtue of a history of non-criminal activity and a lack of mental defect.

People who compare citizens with CC permits with criminals are insane.

27. The odds of a CC holder "hurting you deliberately" is astronomically slim if

you actually look at the stats.

Of course if you've succumbed to the bs that gun owners are a trigger-happy, bloodthirsty lot......well then there's really very little hope that you'll ever be open to the facts.

The actions of one, no matter how personal, really should not be used to judge an entire group.

Also did this person have a license to carry the weapon concealed or was it just a concealed weapon?

49. Did you report it?
In any group of people there are a few bad apples. If this individual brandished a weapon for no cause, he should lose his permit.

Assuming, of course, that you were not threatening him with severe bodily injury or attempting to kill him. I would imagine there are a lot of bad guys who would bitch about someone with a carry permit stopping them from pursuing their chosen occupation by drawing their weapon in a legal manner.

30. The problem is that there is nothing to stop that shooting from happening again in most airports

In most airports anyone with malice can walk into the unsecured areas (baggage, ticketing, lobbies) with a handgun illegally concealed and start shooting.

Georgia is not insane. Georgia is allowing people defend themselves from the very type of person you cite in your article (as well as more common criminals).

Do you really think that a law-abiding gun owner can bring their loaded gun through security?

If the answer is no, why do people bring their guns to the airport anyway if they don't need them there?

39. I think your mistaken about what this law proposes.
Edited on Tue May-04-10 08:49 AM by aikoaiko
In any airport, there is the secured area (by TSA) and the unsecured area. The unsecured areas of the airport include the parking lot, the dropoff/pickup areas, baggage, ticketing, lobbies, etc). There are no mechanisms to prevent anyone with malice from carrying in those areas in my state. The secured areas of the airport are beyond the screening area. And yes, it is reasonable prevent lawful carry there because there are mechanisms for preventing unlawful carry there.

The proposed laws going to the Governor's desks allow carry in the unsecured areas -- not the secured areas.

People may need them in unsecured areas as your story from 2002 points out. That incident happened in an unsecured area (ticketing). Also its not uncommon to have to sit in the unsecured areas of the parking lot, pickup areas, and even inside nearly deserted lobbies waiting for someone to arrive late at night. These are places where law abiding folks are more vulnerable to thugs.

44. You clearly don't understand the issue.
Why the hell are you talking about "bring their loaded gun through security?" We're talking about the UNSECURED areas of the airport. Ticketing, baggage, etc. are UNSECURED. The shooting referenced above occurred in an UNSECURED area. Only ticketed passengers are allowed through security anyway.

Travelers intent on boarding a flight will not be carrying. Their friends/family members who are dropping them off or picking them up may very well be. Many, many people who carry do so all the time. They don't say to themselves, "Whoa... I'm going to the airport. Better gun-up!" Dropping someone off or picking them up at an airport is no different than going anywhere else. It's just one of the many things they have to do that day.

I travel to the airport to pick people up and drop them off. No need to enter the secure area of the airport at all.
