Will Lautenberg anti-gun airport bill increase vulnerability? (Trying to usurp Georgia's new law)
Edited on Fri May-14-10 12:59 PM by shadowrider
Not satisfied with putting grandmothers at risk of losing their legal right to the means of self-defense, or of denying gun purchases to people who haven't even been charged, let alone tried and convicted of any crime, Sen. Frank Lautenberg now means to see us defenseless on the way to and from airports, when we go to drop off or pick someone up.

From his self-serving press release:

As the state of Georgia is about to enact a law that will allow people to carry a loaded gun into the state’s airports -- including Hartsfield-Jackson International -- the world's largest, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today introduced the Firearm-Free Airports Act to strengthen airport security and protect the safety of passengers and airline employees by banning individuals from carrying firearms into commercial airports nationwide.

I guess the "Defenseless on Your Way To and From the Airport Act" sounds clumsy and not as marketable. Heck, we all know that if you want to protect the safety of people from evil terrorists with murder on their minds, there's no better way than slapping up some "No Guns" signs that only the "law-abiding" will obey. And here's how he's going to scare off fanatics willing to blow themselves up to take others with them:

Lautenberg’s measure...would make it illegal to carry a gun into non-federally regulated areas of an airport, including the airport lobby, baggage claim area and ticket counter.

1. Another right-wing site frequently posted as a 'news source.' And grandmothers are at risk?

Where have I heard that somebody wants to kill my grandma as a warning?

Hmm...

By the way, here's one from MSNBC, hardly a RW site. Feel better now?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37140932

From the MSNBC site:

Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue has yet to signal whether he will sign the legislation, but it has the support of gun rights advocates and several prominent GOP leaders.State Rep. Tim Bearden, a former police officer who sponsored the legislation, said the proposal was aimed at protecting and restoring the Second Amendment rights of Georgia residents. He said Lautenberg's proposal was an example of "the federal government trying to trump state rights.""Posting a metal sign that says 'Gun-Free Zone' is not going to stop a terrorist or any criminal intent on doing harm to law-abiding citizens," said Bearden, a Villa Rica Republican. "And our laws that are awaiting signature by the governor pertains only to law-abiding citizens _ it's their Second Amendment rights we're trying to protect."

4. Why so paranoid? Discouraging carrying guns is an absolute good.

6. Yes, the last several shoot-outs I had on the way to and from the airport
...really made me wish that *everyone* at LAX could just run around, brandishing firearms.

In fact, I realized how much I missed open weapon displays there when I was picking up my two sons. How could I not want the baggage carousel room full of loaded guns, instead?

7. Brandishing is illegal and lands people in jail
Your attempt at some form of humor has fallen short.

11. Doesn't seem to be a problem in the...
Tucson, Phoenix, Salt Lake or Manchester (NH) airports.

Maybe we just take the shoot-outs in stride? :sarcasm:

10. It certainly won't do any damn good
...since there are no provisions to physically prevent anyone from bringing a firearm into the airport and performing a repeat of the 2002 LAX shooting. Hadayet had to break a few laws before he could even start shooting, so those didn't do anything to "protect the safety of passengers and airline employees"; what did was one of the El Al guys being armed and putting a few rounds into him. That's also what happened in the Vienna and Rome airport attacks in 1985, by the way: all the bullets that were extracted from the corpses of the terrorists turned out to have come from the guns of El Al employees.

13. It's Lautenberg.. He's 89. In New Jersey.. doubtful.
He's the perennial sponsor or co-sponsor of every single anti-gun bill in the Senate.

16. Oh, I don't know
It's nothing that a mass chorus by Congressional Dems of "Fruitcake from New Jersey" shouldn't take care of.
