Gun Right Advocates Pushing For Open-Carry Law In Texas
http://www.star-telegram.com/2010/05/22/2209564/gun-rights-advocates-pushing-for.html

Texas is considered to have some of the most permissive gun laws in the nation, but gun-rights advocates are making it one of their top political targets because it is one of a handful of states that don't allow handguns to be carried openly.

"It's shocking that Texas, with its history of rugged individualism that the state symbolizes, doesn't allow open carry," said John Pierce, a co-founder of and spokesman for www.OpenCarry.org. If the Legislature doesn't approve an open-carry bill when it convenes in January, "then we'll see them in 2013," Pierce said, referring to that session of the Legislature.

State Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, a former Arlington mayor pro tem, said he would consider voting for the open-carry proposal if it got to the House floor, which he said isn't likely. But that would mean that the proposal had significant support from lawmakers and gun-rights supporters in Texas.

But he said two other bills -- one that would let those who were older than 21 and had the right license to carry concealed handguns on college campuses and another to let licensees keep concealed handguns in their vehicles at work -- will likely get the bulk of attention next session. He said he would support those measures, both of which died during the 2009 legislative session

1. This will continue to simmer as an issue till the next legislative session....
if it succeeds, it will be as a result of the increased numbers of persons who have obtained Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHL), who are discovering the difficulties of making sure - as Texas law currently requires - that their firearms never be even accidentally revealed such as when entering or exiting a vehicle and needing to take off/put on a jacket for concealment (it get hot down here, and wearing a jacket in the car is uncomfortable) or face a class A misdemeanor charge and loss of CHL privileges.

2. I would like the law.
First, for the reason you mentioned. Second, there are some occasions when I would like for my gun to be seen. For example, once every two week I use a walk-up ATM at about 10:20PM. While using it I would like to be able to pull my shirt up and hook it inside the gun so that any potential mugger could see that attempting to rob me would be a very high risk action.

Other than that, and maybe other, similar situations, I would carry concealed.

5. Pierce of Open Carry Dot Org
Had radio ads and even billboards put up asking people to weigh in on it last year I believe. Hopefully this time it builds up more steam and has a better chance.

I kept an eye on this as a regular Open Carrier myself
