Shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, the call came in to the Fort Myers police.

At 9:45 a.m., they checked their weapons one more time before Sgt. Curt Roberts led them into the school.

So, it took them 45 minutes to respond to a *training* event? They knew the simulated attack was coming, but it still took them nearly an hour to respond.

How long will it take them when they don't know when an attack is coming?

Well, I guess this is why you train...to get better, which we can only hope and pray will be the result of this training event.

1. Most police Dept's don't have a dedicated SWAT team

They have police officers trained as SWAT. If a call goes out one or two might be on patrol, the others at home sleeping, out shopping or in a bar. It can take as long as two hours to get the team formed and en route to the incident. While at Chanute AFB IL in the 80's our EST/SWAT team had a two week training class to teach and help setup local police SWAT teams. Periodically we would go to the towns and set-up a unannounced training exercise. The longest one took to respond was 3 1/2 hours.
