GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 8, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

5. Why was he in danger in the first place, I wonder
Oh yeah.....

"The same two male Hispanic teens forced their way into the residence. One of them was armed with a handgun. The (homeowner) retreated and took cover behind a chair where he does exchange a couple rounds of fire," Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Justin Risley said.

9. It's the old "gun vs. gun doesn't count" theory
If you use a gun to defend yourself against someone armed with a gun, it doesn't count as a valid DGU because if guns didn't exist the incident would have been played out with frozen fish.

If you use a gun to defend yourself against someone who is unarmed or armed with a lesser weapon like a knife, it doesn't count as a valid DGU becase it wasn't a fair fight.

2. Oregon School Shooter Seeks New Trial
"GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A young man sentenced to nearly 112 years in prison for killing his parents and going on a deadly shooting rampage at his high school in 1998 is seeking a new trial, claiming evidence of his insanity was disregarded.
Kinkel was 15 when he shot and killed his parents in their home. A day later he drove to Thurston High School in Springfield. Armed with three guns, he sprayed a hallway and the cafeteria with bullets, killing two students and wounding 25. Students tackled Kinkel and disarmed him.
The closest Kinkel came to explaining his actions was in a note he left at home, saying his parents could never live with the embarrassment of his expulsion from school for having a gun in his locker. "

Husband suspected in wife's slaying

By AMY MATTHEW
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

A 46-year-old woman became the city's first murder victim of 2004 when she allegedly was killed by her husband early Wednesday morning.

Yvonne Georgia Padilla died of an apparent gunshot wound to the head, according to Pueblo County Coroner James Kramer. An autopsy will be conducted today.

Padilla's husband, Ray Henry Padilla, 48, was taken into custody outside the family home at 305 N. Bradford St., according to an arrest affidavit by Pueblo police officer Jeremy Mathews. Police went to the house a few minutes before 5:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from the couple's 29-year-old daughter.

"The daughter called from another location," said Deputy Police Chief John Ercul. "He (Padilla) had called her and told her what happened; she then called police."

4. Teenage Boy Gets Probation For Fatal Shooting (TX)
Texas justice...the nation's shame.

"A judge sentenced a 15-year-old boy Wednesday to 10 years probation for fatally shooting a 15-year-old girl.
District Court Judge Carmen Kelsey ordered Steven Jones to serve his probated sentence at a residential facility. Jones must also serve 500 hours of community service, undergo individual and family therapy and enter a substance abuse program.
A jury found Jones guilty of manslaughter in late December for shooting Elizabeth Dolan at her home in April 2003. During the trial, the defendant testified that a gun in his hand accidentally went off when he tried to kiss the victim.
Robert Dolan, the father of the victim, told the judge he felt victimized by the judicial system and the jury for the punishment Jones received. "

20. Three adults, baby shot to death in rural Georgia
"Three adults and a 10-month-old baby were found shot to death early Thursday in two homes in rural Georgia, and three young girls were missing and feared kidnapped.
Gordon County Sheriff's spokesman Clent Harris said an arrest warrant for suspicion of murder had been issued for Jerry William Jones, 31, identified as the father of two of the missing girls and former stepfather of the third.
Authorities said that they believe Jones took all three girls and that the children are in danger.
The murder scenes at the two homes in northwest Georgia showed that the killer was ''very methodical,'' Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said. "

28. Denver cop shot after traffic stop
First rule of a gun fight, Have a gun, second rule of a gunfight, never play fair.

"A 17-year Denver police veteran was shot in the arm Wednesday after a gang member fleeing from a traffic stop allegedly opened fire, with his 2-year-old son strapped in a car seat just inches away.
As frantic "officer down!" calls screamed out over the scanner, dozens of cops descended on the scene. When they arrived, they found that Zamora had abandoned his son, 2, in the back seat of the Mustang. The toddler wasn't injured and was turned over to his grandfather after being wrapped in a blanket and brought to Denver Health Medical Center for observation.
The shooting sparked a massive search in the neighborhood south of Colfax. Officers cordoned off streets, cruisers prowled the pavement and choppers circled. Heavily armed police were seen searching trunks. The SWAT team huddled near the house of Zamora's girlfriend in the 1300 block of Stuart Street, in hopes he would turn up there.
As a precaution, schools within a mile radius were placed on lockdown, and police activated an alert system, warning residents to remain on the lookout from Raleigh Street to Sheridan Boulevard and from West Colfax Avenue to West Eighth Avenue.
Zamora was booked into the Denver City Jail on charges of assault to a police officer and an outstanding traffic warrant. Zamora, who has a criminal record, has previously admitted to being a member of a large, especially violent, Hispanic gang in Denver, according to court records."

30. Police: Woman Carries Gun Into Federal Building (MI)
"A local woman was charged Tuesday after she allegedly walked into the front door of the McNamara Federal Building with a loaded gun.
The McNamara Federal Building is home to the Detroit offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service and the Secret Service, Local 4 reported.
Federal agents were quick to disarm her, according to the station's reports. They apparently found 28 rounds of ammunition inside her purse.
"Actually, it's scary because I don't usually come here and the one time that I do, I wouldn't want something to happen," said one woman. The last time someone brought a gun into the Federal Building was on Sept. 21, 2001, when David Serra, 28, of Chesterfield Township shot and killed Protective Services Officer Ronald Sheffield. "

36. Death of boy, 10, spurs plea for tips (FL)
"It could have been 1997 again, except this time, instead of mourning 5-year-old Rickia Issac, the pastors and police and politicians were gathered to share their outrage over a different stray bullet -- the one that took 10-year-old Jarobe Brooks' life.
Jarobe was sitting with neighbors on the patio of 2602 NW 48th St. when he fell forward -- a bullet in the back of his head, family members and witnesses said.
Residents said the shots that killed Jarobe came from a gunfight that began at Northwest 50th Street and 26th Avenue. A rain of bullets followed two men, maybe more, as they ran near the boy's house."
