IL Gov. Pat Quinn reportedly spending half a million bucks - on THIS?
An ad from Quinn's re-election campaign against "deadly assault weapons." The ad depicts what appears to be a full-auto MP5 that is highly illegal for civilians in Illinois to own, with or without NFA clearance:

And here's a little commentary from someone who has doubts about the efficacy of this ad:

1. I think this is always a losing startegy for Dems.
Such a pity, since it does costs votes.

2. Says whom ?
Says us that's whom . However . There is a large enough pool of like minded constituents ( who are most adamant that they do not exist)it appears worthwhile to someone to pander to them .

6. I believe that it may cost jobs also.
Word is that Winchester is moving its ammunition plant out of Illinois. Gonna cost 1000 or so jobs and a lot of tax revenue.

Yes that state really is in trouble.

7. We have already lost jobs to gun control - and they were proud of it!

The Western area of Illinois, near Quad cities, is home to places like Springfield Armory and upscale operations like Les Baer. We also have other manufacturers like Model 1 Sales and several military contractors.

I believe Les Baer relocated across the river to Iowa several years ago when Blago and Daley were pushing for a complete Assault Weapons ban that would have prohibited even production for military contracts. Jesse Jackson and Pfleger showed up outside a military contactor in Northern Illinois to protest the "deadly assault weapons". It was big news for a few weeks.

Then the bill collapsed as the downstate and West state Dems killed it. In fact pretty much everyone outside Cook County voted no. But Les Baer said BS and moved away with his high paid and skilled jobs to "a more stable political climate."

Daley and Blago said "good riddance" to jobs that "promote death" and that "Illinois will be better off without the killing machines they produce". I'm not sure that the AFL-CIO Machinists that work there felt they were merchants of death, but who cares what the working people think anyway.

Springfield Armory was also looking for a new site out of state last I heard.

Unbelievable stupidity and so deep.

If Quinn would just shut up, sit still and stop doing what Brady and Daley tell him to do, he might pull ahead in the polls.

He keeps forgetting that there's more to Illinois than the South Side of Chicago.

10. Aha! That explains it..
.. I always wondered why the Model 1 Sales guy (Paul something-or-other) had a funny accent.

(They're based out of Texas, now, and make all the local shows.)

3. Maybe these ads work in Illinois ...
The stomping ground of Mayor Daley. At least it allows Gov. Pat Quinn to attack his opponent and divert attention from the problems his state faces.

'Our state is $120.6 billion short!'
August 23, 2010

Illinois is bankrupt. By now that should not come as a surprise. In fact, you've seen so many headlines about Illinois' financial woes that you might even find the subject boring. But it won't be so boring when the impact hits you -- and your planned retirement.

Maybe if we all took a simple and honest look at the problems facing the state, we could gather some consensus about what must be done. What services and benefits do we need and want from the state, and are we willing to pay for them? Instead, we go on as usual in the governor's race with each candidate decrying the other's plans for taxes and spending.

I've got news for you: Both candidates are missing the problem by a mile.

That's not just my opinion. It's the financial analysis of the nonprofit Institute for Truth in Accounting (truthinaccounting.org).

Here's their shocking truth: Even if Illinois used all of its assets -- except for our infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, land, etc. -- we would not have enough to pay the $140.6 billion of bills when they come due.

5. Ban something that's already banned ...
... that's a great way to show the people how in touch you are with the law. Not to mention saying "Fuck You" to 1.6 million Illinois gun owning voters and their extended families.

No Class III in Illinois period - but they already knew that. It's easier to try and scare the less informed than hav a real POV I guess.

But Quinn is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Daley and the Brady group that endorsed him, so expect nothing honest, accurate, understandable or even vaguely constitutional to come out of his mouth re: firearms for the nest few months.

Then, if Brady beats him in November, he'll turn to Daley for a job or help and Daley will do what he did to Blago and every other candidate that failed or gets indicted. Forget his name and phone number.

8. That doesn't just "appear to be" a selective-fire H&K MP5K, it IS.
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 05:55 PM by Euromutt
You can tell by the vertical foregrip (which the semi-auto-only H&K SP89 didn't have) and, more importantly, the three-position "S-E-F" selector lever: S - Sicher, "safe"; E - Einzelfeuer, "single fire"; F - Feuerstoss, "burst." That's not "deadly semi-automatic assault weapon," it's a fricking sub-machine gun.

Besides, with the 1994 AWB, Heckler & Koch stopped importing the SP89, and almost certainly stopped manufacturing it all together. In other words, what is depicted in this ad is a "phantom menace."

11. I noticed that, too
In fact, someone YouTubed the video complete with feedback from viewers before the Quinn campaign censored them.
