Brady Center Fails To Meet Better Business Bureau Standards
Maryland --(Ammoland.com)- Research for a future article on the fund raising and spending habits of certain Maryland political action committees (PACs) produced an unexpected piece of information.

The Brady Center is not listed on the Maryland Campaign Finance web site but a “Google” search did find a listing under the Better Business Bureau.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) produces reports on charities as well as businesses. The BBB Accredited Business and Charities directory contains a listing for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

According to the BBB, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence DOES NOT meet one or more of the 20 standards for Charity Accountability.

1. I'm not sure who's running it as of late, but Sarah Brady's been ill...
...in a fight for her life, actually, with cancer. Regardless, they've done more to curb gun violence that any other organization and gun owners and enthusiasts should be thankful for all they've done. Without the safeguards they've proposed over the years, gun violence would've skyrocketed and might've led to even more draconian controls over gun ownership.

4. What has the Brady Campaign done to curb "gun violence"?
From what I've managed to dig up, most of the measures they've pushed have had no discernible effect.

Oh, and Paul Helmke's the current president of the Campaign, and Dennis Henigan's the executive director of the lobbying wing. They're in effect that counterparts to Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox at the NRA. Sarah Brady's essentially a figurehead, just like whoever the current president of the NRA is (I'm a member and I don't even know off-hand).

5. I'm sure you have evidence of how they've kept "gun violence (from) skyrocket(ing)"...
and will prevent it any minute now, amIright?

"might've led to even more draconian controls over gun ownership." They want to ban hand guns. How much more "draconian" can it get?

8. She has lung cancer, yet refuses to stop smoking
and is adamant that people have a right to smoke if they want to. Forgive me if I find it hard to have a lot of sympathy for her plight.

21. By which you mean you can't actually substantiate your claims
But you'd prefer not to admit that, so you just pretend that there's something "hilarious" about asking for evidence to support your assertions.

Why don't you just put "I'm completely full of shit" in your sig line and save everyone the trouble of responding to you?

27. What passes for hilarity is the volume of responses; punking lite...
It doesn't matter what is said or how accurate the responses. The idea is to upset/anger/pick at, in short to punk. This is somehow "hilarious:" sort of like Onion readers -- very few of which ever crack a smile for all the "hilarity."

and he's one of the darlings of your "movement".

How's that for hilarity?

11. Really? Can you provide factual data to back up that claim?
If true, then I need to reevaluate my opinion on Brady. Can you provide me with data or a link so I can verify that claim as true?

19. From her biography; towards the bottom they talk about her cancer
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 07:14 PM by chibajoe
They also talk about her going in to a gun store to buy a gun for her son.

(it's a long link from Google cache, I hope it works)

20. I don't think cleanhippie was talking about her having lung cancer
But, rather, about the verifiability of Dennis Donovan's claim that the NCCH/HCI/Brady Campaign has "done more to curb gun violence that any other organization," and that, absent the restrictions they supported, "gun violence would've skyrocketed."

13. Draconian controls like outrageous magazine capacity limits, bans on protruding rifle handgrips,
a ban on possession of any firearm in a functional state inside your own home, bans on handguns, and revoking the gun rights of anyone on the Bush administration's secret blacklists?

Oh, wait, they supported those things...

10. I wonder what they're not doing that they are supposed to by BBB standards.
The BBB is often cryptic in their rankings and info.

18. It's listed in the article
In short, it comes down to:

- the Board of Directors doesn't contain a treasurer to oversee the organization's finances;
- the Board contains too many members who are compensated by the organization they're supposed to be overseeing;
- the organization does not provide the Board with a written report regarding effectiveness assessments;
- the website does not contain the organization's IRS Form 990; and
- the website does not outline what security measures are in place to protect personal information about donors and visitors to the site.

23. On your last point
They have a policy, but they lie have mispoken. Here is a direct quote from the Brady Campaign's website, about their "Privacy Policy".

Email List Subscription
The Brady Campaign and the Brady Center use your email address to send you news and alerts that you have requested. When subscribing to this and future email lists, the Brady Campaign or Brady Center will collect and store the personal information that you provide. However, the Brady Campaign and the Brady Center will not sell your name or e-mail address to spammers or share it with unaffiliated groups.

But since the Joyce Foundation has reduced its grant where it barely covers Paul Helmke's and Kristin Rand's six figure salaries, they have had to resort to other ways to raise cash.
