GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 20, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Toddler Left Alone In Car Shoots Self With Father's Gun (FL)
"A toddler left alone in a car shot himself in the head with his father's gun.
Travis Jenkins Jr., 3, was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital early Tuesday with a bullet wound that entered his forehead and exited through the top of his skull, according to family members.
"Right now, this appears to be accidental," said Miami police spokeswoman Detective Herminia Salas-Jacobson. "But there are a lot of big questions. Such as why this child was left alone in the car, and why did he have access to a weapon?"
Travis Jenkins Sr., 26, was questioned by police while his son underwent surgery. Family members say the boy's father had a permit to carry the gun. "

"DONIPHAN, MO - A Doniphan woman remains in critical condition on a ventilator in a Memphis hospital after being shot in the head. The shooting happened in Doniphan, Missouri Friday evening.
"We received a phone call from the victim's mother," explained Adam Whittom, Sheriff of Ripley County.
Whittom told K8 News that Daniel Dewayne McCoy, 50, of Doniphan, likely forced his way into Misty Caldwell's home. He appears to have locked Caldwell's two-year-old son in a bedroom. The Sheriff said at some point McCoy shot the 24-year-old woman and locked her into another bedroom, then fled."

7. Frazeysburg man injured after shooting at residence (OH)
"According to Knox County Sheriff David Barber, at approximately 11:53 p.m., his office received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a man had been shot at 27790 Jug Run Road. Deputies and the Bladensburg Fire Department emergency squad responded to the scene along with Barber, where they found Brandon J. Wilson, of that address, with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Barber said the shooting, which appears to have been self-inflicted, apparently followed an argument between the victim and his 19-year-old, live-in girlfriend. A handgun owned by the victim was recovered from the scene and the incident is still under investigation."

8. Bar Owner Booked In Fatal Shooting (LA)
Booze AND guns..what could possibly go wrong there?

"NEW ORLEANS -- An argument Sunday outside a New Orleans bar between the bar's owner and another man ended with one fatally shooting the other, police said.
Joe Glaspher, 62, owner of Joe's Cozy Corner, was booked with second-degree murder.
After the argument became physical, Glaspher allegedly pulled a handgun and fired, hitting the victim in the abdomen. The victim was taken to Charity Hospital, where he died.
The popular bar has hosted numerous popular New Orleans bands, but it is not the first time gunfire has erupted there. A fatal shooting occurred at the bar in late 2002. "

"White Bear Lake police arrested a 24-year old man Sunday morning after a routine traffic stop yielded narcotics, illegal handguns and car audio parts that may have been stolen.
Police stopped the White Bear Lake man about 1:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of Hilltop Street after he almost struck a marked police vehicle while making a left turn, said Capt. H.W. Schmahl of the White Bear Lake police department.
Officers arrested the man after they found he did not have a driver's license, was uninsured and had warrants out for burglary and driving after license cancellation, Schmahl said."

23. Family, friends mourn deliveryman (PA)
"The execution-style slaying of a pizza deliveryman Sunday night in Frankford left police and family members grasping for a motive yesterday.
Homicide Unit investigators have not ruled out attempted robbery as the reason someone shot Bita Dobromirescu, 46, behind his right ear after he made a delivery to an apartment at Leiper and Arrott Streets shortly after 9 p.m. But Dobromirescu's employer and family members discounted that theory on why the native of Romania was slain.
"They didn't attempt to take money," his daughter, Lucia Dobromirescu, 19, said in an interview yesterday. "If someone wanted to rob him, they would have just put the gun out and taken his money. He would have given his money, his shoes, anything." "

28. Police officer shot by own weapon at elementary school (GA)
http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=29761

Carrolton, GA:

A police officer arriving at an elementary school to teach a Drug Awareness and Resistance Education class was accidentally shot in the left leg by his own gun as he was getting out of his patrol car Tuesday, officials said.

*snip*

The DARE class was cancelled but other classes continued as scheduled, Carrollton schools Superintendent Tom Wilson said.

No children were in danger when the gun went off, Wilson said.

Under police department rules, no guns are worn in the elementary school, and Fontenot had taken the weapon from his holster and put it on the car seat when it went off, the superintendent
said.

*end*

How TF did it just "go off" if it was laying on a car seat? And why was it "just laying" on the car seat, loaded at that?:eyes:
