What percentage of shooting victims are themselves criminals?
I happened to come across two newspaper articles on the web.

http://www.buffalonews.com/city/article168979.ece
Buffalo, NY: A party turned into a blazing gunfight that left eight people shot. Seven of the eight had prior records. Five of them had felony convictions.

http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/102233204.html
According to a 2007 report by the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, most homicide victims in Milwaukee were likely to have criminal records. The commission report found that 75% of homicides victims had previous contact with the criminal justice system, including arrests and convictions.

A few monthw ago a study from Philadelphia was discuss on this forum. The study wrongly concluded that if you carried a gun you were 4.46 times more likely to be shot. The study can be found here: http://works.bepress.com/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1087&context=dennis_culhane
On page 3 of the report we find that 53% of the shooting victims had prior arrest records.

So my question is: Does anyone know of any recent studies into what percentage of shootings are crime-on-crime? I tried googling but couldn't find any good info.

1. Seems like as no brainer to me most shootings I hear about
are usually drive bys. Sometimes an innocent victim may be caught by accident but usually it is one thug shooting another thug. A lot of the other shooting or stabbings happen in a bar that is patronized by the same type of lowlifes.

2. Considering that MOST gun crime is NOT done by legal owners...
I would say that nearly ALL of it falls into that category.

But that does not deter those that want to take guns away from those NOT committing the crime.....

3. Maybe it's an unseemly attraction between gun-controllers and thugs...
but it is apparent that when a thug-on-thug shooting occurs, many gun-controllers take their cue from the thug and propose measures designed to curtail lawful gun-owners from exercising their 2A rights.

I never knew that some half-literate, swastika-wearing, drawers-to-knees punk could have that much influence on social policy.

6. That's another sound-bite to be manipulated.
Gun control proponents like to repeat the phrase that 75% of the victims and killers knew each other. They try very hard to make you think one or both were just ordinary folks doing ordinary things until the presence of a gun made them snap and in a fit of pique over leaving the toilet seat up one of them killed the other.

You are not supposed to remember that Al Capone knew Bugs Moran. Or that Bob Ford knew that "Thomas Howard" was Jesse James. The idea that dirty bastards engaged in a dirty business do nasty things to each other is NOT supposed to cross your mind.

Just like the iconic public service announcement that shows a black toddler piling books on chairs to retrieve a 9mm pistol from the top of a closet, fade to black and the sound of a gunshot while the announcer intones how many hundred children a day succumb to gun violence.

That's the image they want in your head, not that of teenage punks shooting each other over turf, street creds and "respect." Despite the fact that to inflate the numbers they include "career criminals" as old as 23 in their 'kid count.'

In a majority of cases, the relationship is 'stranger' or 'unknown'.

7. I did find an article about motorcycle gangs in a shootout ...

Motorcycle Gangs Shoot It Out on Yuma Drive in Chino Valley

Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:22

According to Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn, 27 suspects have been taken into custody following yesterday's motorcycle gang shooting.

The Hells Angels and the Vagos motorcycle gangs were identified as being the primary participants. D'Evelyn explained that detectives initially didn't want to identify the gangs involved, in case there were multiple clubs involved.

At least 5 persons were injured during the shooting, and one person is thought to have been injured and taken away in an unknown vehicle.

9. In Chicago, it appears that the answer is "most."
http://crimelab.uchicago.edu/gun_violence/report.shtml

In recent years, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has reported that roughly 45 percent of homicides in Chicago are related to gang altercations or narcotics. The CPD also reports that 90 percent of all homicide offenders and nearly three-quarters of homicide victims have prior arrest records
