Lee County erases ban on guns (Florida)

1:10 A.M. — Hundreds of signs across Lee County that proclaim guns are banned at parks, beaches, along canals and at other areas are being changed to comply with state law.

The state allows guns at these locations if the gun owner has a concealed-carry permit.

Fort Myers attorney J. Patrick Buckley filed suit against the county and the East County Water Control District over the issue Monday.

The water district dispatched three employees Wednesday to alter most of its 400 or so signs along canals, lakes and other district properties.

3. How does any city counsel sign off on something like this?
I mean, they're like lawyers and shit.. they have to know such things won't stand up in a state court. I can see a city council doing it to get votes, but you'd think they'd seek the opinion of the city's chief prosecutor. Sheesh.

4. Sigh...there is no IQ test to be on a city council...

and since voter turnout is generally very low, allowing local political machines to do their work, it can easily turn into a "good ol' boys network", whether in small-town Florida or in Chicago.

I used to live in Escambia County, Florida for a while, a county which is noteworthy for (1) religious nuttery of all flavors and (2) the fact that the entire county commission was in jail or under indictment at one time in the late '90s, as I recall.

Dave Barry joked that Miami-Dade politicians "traditionally fall into one of three categories: (1) incompetents; (2) criminals; and (3) incompetent criminals." Unfortunately, Miami-Dade isn't the only place that is true. I have to say my current town (in eastern NC) has its act together, though.
