Cat killed after bump in the night: RCMP


A Red Deer, Alta., man was in police custody on Monday after allegedly shooting his family cat by accident.

Red Deer RCMP say that 31-year-old Daryl Brownell loaded a rifle after a hearing a suspicious noise in his home early Sunday morning.

When he went to investigate, Brownell stumbled and inadvertently pulled the trigger of the gun, according to police.

The bullet went through two walls in the house and into a wall of a neighbouring home.

No one was injured.

The cat, however, was killed.

Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Brownell faces four firearms-related charges.

A 77-year-old man who visited his wife in hospital every day since she was admitted earlier this month walked in for the last time yesterday, shot her dead and turned the gun on himself.

The murder-suicide occurred at about 1 p.m. The man's 80-year-old wife, apparently suffering from dementia, had been admitted to the Penticton Regional Hospital on Aug. 1, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Rick Dellebuur said.

Dellebuur said the man killed his wife with a handgun before using the same gun on himself
