Rep. Lummis seeks remedy for South Korean rifles
CHEYENNE — U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis is seeking to stop the federal government from interfering with the legal importation of surplus collectable U.S.-made firearms from South Korea. The Wyoming Republican has joined with Indiana Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly in introducing a bill called the Collectable Firearms Protection Act.

The proposed bill removes the State Department and the Defense Department from the regulatory process.

Don't know anything else, but it seems to be a joint project.

1. I shudder to wonder what condition those things are in.
I'd like a genuine Garand for my collection as much as anybody, but I can't help but worry those things have been ill treated and are going to be near worthless.

11. My Danish return Garand is in great shape

Same for the 2 Italian return carbines I picked up from the CMP last summer.

I know some of them were "beat up and rode hard", but the CMP does a good job of screening and grading

And of course you can always go to Anniston or Camp Perry stores and see them for yourself.

18. Make it your ring tone!
We took part of my WWII collection out to a local private range and one of the guys recorded me firing off a full 8 round clip and even caught the "Ping". Now some of us have it as an alternative ring tone.

Fortunately I stocked up on the Greek Pyrkal ammo while they still had some in stock in the spam cans. They shoot great though. Once you get the feel, learn to keep your thumb down so the op rod doesn't smash it (don't ask how I know that) and dial in the sights at 200 and 300 yards yards, the gun consistently shoots better than I do.

I couldn't bring myself to refinish any of them. Every scratch and dent is part of their history.

6. Joe Donnelly, Blue Dog Democrat, Takes Aim At Pelosi In Campaign Ad. Attacks President Obama.
U.S. Congressman Joe Donnelly, a Blue Dog Democrat representing Indiana's second district, is out with a new campaign ad taking aim none other than House Speaker Nancy Pelsoi.

A narrator in the 30-second spot boasts that Donnelly "voted against Nancy Pelosi's energy tax on Hoosier families." Targeting the California Democrat over cap-and-trade is cited in promoting the incumbent lawmaker as "Indiana's most independent congressman."

Earlier this month, Donnelly took a shot at the House Speaker, as well as President Obama, in an ad zeroing-in on the issue of illegal immigration. When an image of the duo alongside House Minority Leader John Boehner flashed across the screen, the Blue Dog Democrat said, "That may not be what the Washington crowd wants, but I don't work for them, I work for you."

24. What do you want from your representative?
"..........but I don't work for them, I work for you."

Sounds to me he is counting on votes in his district. Is not that their job description?

You don't like it, vote for his opponent. You not in his district? You can always whine and snivel on the Internet.

21. Yes, because we all know that expensive, 8-shot, 10-lb, 44", 70-year-old collectible rifles

are the weapons of choice of criminals, terrah ists, and other unammuricans. :eyes:

Given that rifles of any type are the least likely class of firearms to be misused, and that the Federal government sells these to qualified civilians as target rifles, I think the hysteria here is a bit misplaced.

22. And your basis for saying this is....what, exactly?
You read The Dogs of War one too many times?

You have a tip that a bunch of World War II reenactors are plotting revolution?

Band of Brothers DVDs have secret messages hidden in them calling for insurrection?

Please get over yourself, this is a reach even by your standards....

23. "Terrorists"? Are you high?
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 04:23 AM by Euromutt
The last time anyone who might reasonably be described as a terrorist used an M1 carbine was over 30 years ago. I think the Provisional IRA had a few stashed away, and the Symbionese Liberation Army used them (insofar as the SLA were terrorists, as opposed to common criminals masquerading as a political organization) but anyone who could get their hands on something more modern did so without hesitation.

You know, when the criteria you use to label people "racists", "fascists" or "terrorists" don't seem to consist of more than "disagrees with me on private ownership of firearms," you're going to have to get used to having it pointed out to you that you're full of shit.

15.  Your a little behind.
I have 5 "as issued" Garands. And 2 Nat Match, one in .308. That one I built from a 1958 rifle with a burned barrel.
"As Issued" means current mix master M1's.

There are also 220,000 M1 carbines involved in this batch.

16. I'm still young and have time to build my collection.
The one I inherited from my grandfather, is the rifle that he brought home from WW2. There are only minor blemishes on the stock, and it has very little wear. All of its parts are original. Every year when I bring it to my gun smith for a thorough service he offers me quite a bit of money for it. And every year I tell him no.

My grandfather also saved all of the accesories that he could. The bayonette, the cleaning kit and the sling. I keep those pieces boxed up.

I take the rifle out at least once a month and go through about 500 rounds at the range.

How do you like the .308? I find that I am far more accurate at longer ranges 300+ with the .308 over the 30-06, and way, way more accurate at 600+.

I don't know why(were they not based off the same cartridge, just shorter?) it is that way, but it is very noticable.

Oooh... I would like a carbine.

17.  The .308 is my HighPower rifle, It will hold 1 1/2" at 200yds.
The 308 is a shortened 30-06, built for use in a shorter action and using the new powder technology to get the same velocities.

My NM Garand has the following: Krieger mid weight barrel, front and rear Nat Match sights, bedded action and floated barrel, 3.5# trigger w/ minimal creep, Nat Match op rod w/polished gas system, new over sized Boyds stock ( I fitted the stock LOP and cheek weld for me), all metal work reparked, stock is oil finished.

It was a Import that had the importers stamp so deep in the barrel you could feel it with a tight patch! Tended to keyhole at 50yds.
