Murders in San Diego at lowest level since 1968
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/15/murders-san-diego-lowest-level-1968/

“I’m absolutely astounded at 29 total homicides for a city with a 1.3 million population,” said Mayor Jerry Sanders, who was the city’s police chief from 1993 to 1999. “That’s just unbelievable to me.”
Of the nation’s 10 largest cities, only San Jose had fewer slayings and a lower homicide rate last year.
Nationwide, murder has decreased for four consecutive years, dropping 7.3 percent in 2009 over the previous year, according to the FBI. National data for 2010 was not available, but numbers for the first half of the year show the trend is continuing.
The biggest year-over-year difference in this county was in San Diego, which logged 41 killings in 2009 — a 29 percent drop.

Even with the toughest gun control laws of California. AWB and "at will CCWs". A 29% drop in murders. Story list some of the reasons for the drop.

1. San Diego & San Jose are typically 1/2 the murder rate of LA
In the 2009 UCR, San Diego had a murder rate of 4.33/100k and San Jose was at 3.28/100k while LA was at 9.97/100k.

LA needs to work on it's gang problem.

6. For a big city, Chicago is pretty good
22 in the nation.

http://www.faqs.org/shareranks/994,Highest-Murder-Rate-US-Cities. You'd think they would be #1.

7. Umm, you do realize that's not a statistics site, yes?
You can 'vote' things up or down.

Try the UCR.

11. You should read the whole article, MichaelHarris.
I read it in the paper edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune this morning.

5. As they are in the rest of the US...
... in spite of 14 million new guns sold last year - even in states with "shall-issue" CCWs.

Your point?

10. And the US in general had homicide levels not seen since 1964
So in spite of the tighter Californian gun laws, and the county sheriff's office being authoritarian shitheads, and real estate prices being unaffordable, San Diego is actually lagging behind the national average.

12. El Paso Texas murder rate in 2010 was 5 over around 700,000 people. 1/3 murder rate of San Diego
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 03:57 PM by lawodevolution
which means the murder rate in El Paso where there are almost no gun restrictions and where poverty is more widespread is 1/3 that of San Diego.

El Paso murder rate 0.65/100,000 in 2010
