Ron Paul: Gun control push after Tucson massacre is ‘despicable’

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul assailed as "nonsensical" the recent attempts at stiffening gun control laws in the aftermath of the shooting rampage in Arizona that killed six and left thirteen injured

In an op-ed for The Hill published Monday, Paul sharply denounced the violence in Tucson last Saturday, but said that "some have attempted to use this tragedy to discredit philosophical adversaries or score political points. This sort of opportunism is simply despicable."

Members of both parties, in response to the shootings that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) critically wounded, have introduced legislation that would outlaw the selling of high-capacity ammunition magazines, close the "gun show loophole," and people from carrying firearms within 1,000 feet of lawmakers.

"This always seems to be the knee jerk reaction to any crime committed with a gun," Paul wrote. "Nonsensical proposals to outlaw guns around federal officials and install bulletproof barriers in the congressional gallery only reinforce the growing perception that politicians view their own lives as far more important than the lives of ordinary citizens."

5. Whether it's guns or health care or anything else...
...with our elected officials, it will always be a matter of "I've got mine." They basically run the campaigns to get to the "perks zone," and once they arrive, they become fat. contented, and complacent about the people who elected them.

Not "all" politicians...just too damned many of them.

2. What a despicable thing to say
Why, it's our God Given Right to have access to extended clips and assault weapons. If not, then the Nazi/Commie/Socialist/Muslim/Negro/Pinko/Traitor has won and we're all doomed.

What a dipshit.

Are you aware of the racist roots of gun control?

No actual *EFFECTIVE* laws.

7. I cannot stand this guy.
Especially when I agree with him. He shares my views on the Patriot Act, the TSA, Wikileaks and gun-control.

He has to be lying one way or another. Either he does not believe what he is stating, or he is not truly a Republican.

13. Problem is I cannot figure out if the guy is my enemy.
If the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Would the enemy of my enemy's enemy be my friend or my enemy?

Or, what if my enemy is my occasional friend, would his enemy be my friend or my enemy some of the time or all of it?

12. I couldn't agree more
Actually, the problem with Ron Paul, to my mind, is that he's only socially liberal in that he doesn't want the government (and specifically the federal government) stomping on people's freedoms. He's perfectly content with letting private entities stomp on people's freedoms instead, without interference from the government.

26. That's the problem with libertarians.
Somehow they think that having big business on your back is preferable to having big government on your back.

30. Yeah, I've noticed that about some (maybe a lot) of libertarians.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 04:34 PM by benEzra
Some forget that governments are established to protect rights from nongovernmental entities, and way too many of them are perfectly willing for corporations to exercise powers that would be considered abject tyranny if they were they exercised by something calling itself a "government".

Since a corporation is a government-chartered entity, it puzzles me why so many believe the rights of corporations should exceed those of persons.
