Rachel Maddow Accepts Meghan McCain's Invitation To NRA Convention

On her Monday show, Rachel Maddow said she would attend the next NRA convention--and revealed a surprising fact about her first date with her partner, Susan Mikula.

Maddow was speaking to Meghan McCain about gun control. McCain, who is an NRA member, invited Maddow to join her at the next convention. "Yes, absolutely, I accept," Maddow replied instantly.

But Maddow also revealed that the NRA played a part in her relationship with Mikula.

"My first date with Susan was at an NRA 'Ladies Day On The Range' event, and that is as close as I have ever gotten to the NRA," she said.

I hope she attends. Pittsburgh April 29th to May 1st.

4. Guns are not a left / right issue and the NRA is not all bad.

The NRA to their credit is beginning to see that.

I own a few guns and I enjoy shooting. I especially enjoy skeet and trap. Shooting is usually a social and family activity for me. Most of my family has advanced degrees so it is not really a redneck thing.

A number of times I can remember my dad buying a few bricks of .22 long rounds and spending all afternoon shooting with me in creek bed. It was quality time and I would not deny any one that experience.

I have done a fair amount of hunting. I always eat what I shoot. This is often a social activity and it is deeply engrained in rural American culture.

I would rather not have concealed weapons in some of the less than affluent neighborhoods of Chicago that I have lived in. I do not know all of the answers there but I a sure that it does not involve more guns. I might however I like to cary a pistol while while solo backpacking in some National Forrest areas. That is probably because I saw Deliverance as a child.

My opinions are not black and white enough to actually join the NRA but they are not all wrong. A polarized gun debate isn't going to accomplish anything. It is defiantly a loosing political issue in the non urban areas. Also, the electoral map has changed.

5. Maybe she will get smart on the issue. Her past few shows have demonstrated her ignorance

on the subject. I lost a lot of respect for her over the past week. She is usually so careful, factual and clearheaded. Not so much on this subject.
