Mayors Push for Enforcement of Background Checks (MAIG - Bloomberg and Co.)
Members from the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition gathered in New York this morning to advocate for a simple solution to cutting down on gun violence: just adhere to the existing laws already on the books.

The group, lead by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, released a press statement this morning calling for the government to crack down on background check loopholes. They are pushing for a stricter enforcement of the 1968 gun law that prohibits people with a history of drug abuse, criminal activity, or mental illness, from buying guns.

--snip--

Rather than propose totally new legislation, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns are putting time limits on the enforcement of the existing 1968 laws. In their statement, the group gives Congress a three-year time frame to update the background check system. They are pushing for the inclusion of felony convictions, drug crime, domestic violence incidents, and mental illness information in the system.

Simply enforce existing ones.

Not sure how they'd accomplish EVERYONE undergo a background check especially if they're purchasing from a non-FFL source, UNLESS they'd require registration with strict penalties for failure to disclose all information on the person to whom they sold the weapon.

Sometimes parsing what ISN'T said is more important that what IS said.

2. Hold on, though, keep reading...
The group also wants to require every gun sale to use background checks. As the law stands, only official gun sellers need to use background checks, which excludes 'occasional' sellers, like those at gun fairs or over the internet.

So they do want new legislation. I suspect the Observer basically copied their fucking press release without bothering to spot the contradiction.

4. I have always hed a background check on all guns bought since that law
went into effect, including the gun I just bought ten days ago...Bloomberg is looking for free publicity again..From what I read here, there isa bsolutely nothing new they are proposing- all those things are covered in the search syetem and the questionaire. Do they want to expand the definitions of "mental illness" for example,or do they want to predict which people will use their guns for illegal purposes? It sounds good on its face, but it's just more Bloomberg bullshit- he wants to be president!

5. Im not sure how I feel
about how Pennsylvania is handling its background checks. Both long guns and pistols need one when purchased but for private sales only pistols need a background check. That sounds decent on the surface of it, but they are using the system to illegally run a registry. Most officers will even admit they are doing it, but what can you do about it? They tried to work rifles and shotguns into the mix as well but that didnt hold up.

Perhaps if our public officials didnt so willfully try to break the laws I would be more ok with the background checks and transfers.

6. PA Staate Police keep a file on ALL handgun purchases since 1936, despite
the fact that such is illegal in PA.

8. It was illegal to kill in the south before the civil rights movement yet many lynchings went without
Punishment.

10. and far too often
the authorities were directly involved.

Its a big dance here. The law says its illegal to operate a firearms registry. They get around it by only registering handguns, thereby its only a partial registry and therefore not illegal. It stinks to me. They also dont call it a handgun registry but throw a fit when they find an "unregistered" hand gun someone moved into the state with.

took over.

9. Deception. Act as if they are not proposing new legislation but still plan to hide some new
Laws in the scheme. Tactics by these bigots remain the same, don't be fooled b them.
