NH teachers: Guns in Statehouse = No Dr. Seuss readings
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 08:59 AM by -..__...
And the anti's claim that gun owners are the ones who are fearful.

Talk about over reacting and spreading baseless fear inducing nonsense...

:eyes:

CONCORD – The cat can be in the hat, but apparently guns cannot be in the Statehouse.

The state’s largest teachers union announced Monday it would not hold its annual Read Across America event at the Statehouse because guns are allowed in the building.

Citing safety concerns, the National Education Association of New Hampshire won’t allow fourth-graders to hear the works of Dr. Seuss, as read by senators and Gov. John Lynch, at the Statehouse. Instead, the union will try to arrange for state senators to visit schools in their home districts.

“The moment we learned that guns would be permitted in the (Statehouse) we began talking to our members and to parents and found that they shared our deep discomfort with NEA-NH sponsoring an event at a facility – in this case the Statehouse – that is not a gun-free zone,” the union’s President Rhonda Wesolowski wrote in a press release.

For 12 years, NEA-NH has arranged for nearly 50 fourth-graders to annually visit the Statehouse for the Read Across America event. State senators, television personalities and athletes read aloud stories by children’s author Dr. Seuss, according to the union’s spokesman, Keith McCrea.

But the union decided to cancel the event this year after lawmakers allowed the carrying of weapons in the Statehouse.

1. are you kidding! you think they are overreacting?
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 12:16 PM by sasha031
never in a million years would I want my children in a building where people are aloud to carry weapons.

It's getting very creepy when people think this is the new norm.
The parents along with the teachers were not comfortable with the situation, I for one can't blame them.

on edit I don't recommend your comment but rec the story. Your kitty with a weapon spells volumes where your head is at....

3. Excellent point
and I live in Arizona that has both open and concealed carry. I think that the parents should have had the option to keep their 4th grader home that day.

5. Its only a matter of time. The trend is clear.
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 12:35 PM by Statistical
Also I apologize for not being clear.

40 (likely 41 this year) states have "shall issue" or "may issue" laws.
Another 8 states have "may issue" laws including MA which are not equal protection under the law.
Only IL and WI completely ban conceal carry.
WI currently allows open carry (weapon visible) instead and a bill to allow conceal carry looks likely to pass this year.

I posted 41 without thinking because I consider that 8 states with "may infringe" laws to be part of the problem.

Still you pass lawfully armed citizens every single day.

7. You have every right to that opinion ...
just as I have every right to support shall issue concealed carry. I live in Florida where it is fairly common.

Every month Florida publishes a report on concealed carry in the state at: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/stats/cw_monthly.html

Currently this report covers a time span of 23 years from October 1, 1987 - December 31, 2010. During that period of time, Florida issued 1,902,769 concealed weapons permits and currently 780,595 are valid. Only 168 licenses have been revoked for the use of a firearm in a crime after the license had been issued.

11. Supporting gun rights is perfectly consistent with advocating for peace
They're both liberal positions.

Pulling out of a literacy event in a snit-fit over an unrelated policy is a bit less admirable, however...

9. I hope you like your home
as it is you really can't leave without the possibility of contact with someone legally carrying a gun....of coarse, you have never been able to leave your home without the distinct possibility of someone illegally carrying one. BTW, do you care what the stats say about legal concealed carry and your safety? Or are you content living within your own unfounded fear?

15. I am speaking of going out into public
concealed carriers, now in the multi-millions, have proven in all 40+ states with concealed carry on the books, not to be a danger to anyone except criminals attempting to victimize them.

12. It sounds reasonable to me. In addition to the risk of crazies intent on political assassination,
you have the risk of loony lawmakers firing at real & imagined threats. I wouldn't want my kids in the crossfire.

16. I'm sure you can cite examples of
"loony lawmakers firing at real & imagined threats."? Do you think laws prohibiting concealed carry in the statehouse would in any way deter "crazies intent on political assassination"?

18. I see. The NEA would prefer kids sit in a "Target Rich Environment"
I wonder what the most common question was when Cho was committing mass murder at VT.

My vote goes to: Does anyone have a gun?

21. Statehouse = not a gun free zone. Schools = gun free zone.
Compare a list of mass shooting in schools vs statehouses.

To cancel the trip to protect children is stupid.
