King proposes gun control at public events (Redefining, already, what 1000 feet is)
WASHINGTON - Defying those who assert the right to bear arms at town halls, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) Wednesday introduced strict new gun-control legislation that would bar people from taking firearms to public events attended by elected federal officials.

The bill would create a 1,000-foot gun-free zone around the event - not just around the lawmakers as King originally proposed in an announcement...

1. Are they going to post signs at the perimeter indicating that a town hall meeting is occurring?

so if an individual with a carry license doesn't get arrested just he happens to be out for a walk and passes by the place the town hall meeting is occurring.

I live within 1000 feet of the possible location for a town hall meeting. If I walk out of my house to my car with my legally concealed firearm intending to go to the store could I be arrested?

Exactly what good will this law accomplish. Does anyone seriously believe that passing such a law would stop an individual like Jared Loughner from bringing a firearm to the meeting. Such a person intends to commit murder, why would he be stopped by a "feel good" law?

edited to better clarify. {/i]

2. It also doesn't define *what* constitutes an event
Is it the street perimiter around the building or is there an exclusion zone (say 500 feet) further out at which point the 1000 foot restriction starts or is it 1000 from the outside of the building where the event is taking place.

So many questions, so little time.

3. They got it all backward
They should not be allowed within 1000 feet of a citizen . It would be infinitely beneficial to quite a few if this were expanded to include various and sundry electronic recording devices .

4. Pete King is a moron
but I guess he figured out that lawmakers can move around and therefore the 1000-foot zone moves with them. His new bill isn't any better. People can still become criminals through no fault of their own. Suppose I'm staying in a hotel and I have my carry piece with me. I go to sleep Monday night, and Tuesday morning Representative Blowhard (R-NE) has a fundraiser in the conference room downstairs. He's within 1000 feet of me so I've now committed a federal felony -- in my sleep, no less!

5. The unanswered question is
is the 1000 foot limit around an event and once the event is over, is the 1000 feet now around the politician? If it's only around the event, you're clear. If it isn't, there aren't enough prisons worldwide to handle the amount of peaceful law-abiding lawbreakers to hold them all.

7. So if the event is close to an interstate, then you have to detour.?
Does he want me go get off the interstate and drive around on city streets, guessing if I am 1K feet away. Will there be a new GPS ap for that?
